In addition, the Toronto District School Board is currently seeking suggestions to name the new elementary school being built near the city's waterfront. Planet in Focus has nominated Toronto-born activist, filmmaker, and educator Rob Stewart. Visit tdsb.on.ca/block31 by March 10, 2017 to do the same. Please feel free to use the following information as part of your support explanation in the application:
Rob Stewart, 1979-2017
As a Canadian filmmaker and environmentalist, Rob Stewart has revealed that sharks are a species under attack with approximately 100 million being killed every year. As an activist, Stewart has managed to shift the public’s perspective to demonstrate that the oceans need sharks to maintain ecological balance. Through his films SHARKWATER (2007) and REVOLUTION (2013) and the power of social media, Stewart created the #FinFree movement which has banned the killing of sharks and consumption of shark fin soup in cities and countries around the globe. In 2015, Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival in Toronto honoured Rob with the International Eco-Hero Award for his commitment to environmental education and international activism through the arts. Toronto-born Rob Stewart's legacy make him a worthy namesake for the Railway Lands elementary school, so fittingly on the city's waterfront.
