Book Awards deadline Feb. 1

Books by and about Arab Americans published in 2012 must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, for consideration in the 2013 Arab American Book Award program, presented by the AANM. The only national literary competition of its kind, the Book Awards recognizes creative and academic excellence and promotes the mainstreaming of quality literature by and about Arab Americans. Categories are Fiction, Non-Fiction, Children/Young Adult and Poetry. Past winners include both recognized names and emerging talents; 2011 winning authors appear at top. Education pivotal in battle for civil rights



Diverse community leaders concur that education is vital in ongoing efforts to combat racism and stereotypes. As we approach next Monday’s federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., (above) AANM asks that you help spread information about scholarship opportunities by forwarding this email (see envelope icon above right). ADC Michigan’s MLK Jr.-themed essay contest for high school seniors in metro Detroit has a submission deadline of next Monday, Jan. 21; winners are revealed at a Feb. 22 gala. On the ADC national website, read about the Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarship for college students; its deadline is April 3 with winners announced during the ADC National Convention this June.  Also there is a list of other Arab American scholarship opportunities.
