OUTER HEAVEN "Diabolus Vobiscum"

OUTER HEAVEN "Diabolus Vobiscum"
LP - $7.50
MELOTOV / MLTVR031

Simply put, the Douglassville, Pennsylvania quartet known as Outer Heaven is "new school death metal with an old school feel" (DECIBEL Magazine). But the carefully crafted mix of doom, sludge, death metal, a dash of black metal, and a heaping serving of hardcore breakdowns that Outer Heaven brings to the table is anything but simple. Game changer, yes. Simple, no.

Founded in 2012 (and discovered by Melanie at Melotov after Jami of Code Orange posted a link to their demo), Outer Heaven is a familiar name in the hardcore scene, having played recently with bands like Full of Hell, Enabler, and Old Wounds. But on their debut EP "Diabolus Vobiscum", (which translates to "Satan Be With You"), the band dives headfirst into the abyss, showing total commitment to its sound: minimal, unearthly doom-death. From slithering dirges to mid-tempo headbangers, "Diabolus Vobiscum" is thoroughly soaked in evil, thanks in part to its cavernous production job. The EP was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Outer Heaven frontman Austin Haines at his own Black Beacon Sound in Douglassville, Pennsylvania.

Haines is backed by guitarist Jonathan Kunz (a founding member of Rivers of Nihil), bassist Phil Jaquez, and drummer Paul Chrismer.

COLISEUM "Anxiety's Kiss"

COLISEUM "Anxiety's Kiss"
CD - $6.00 / LP - $9.60 / CASSETTE - $6.00
DEATHWISH / DW173

Founded by Louisville musician Ryan Patterson and including Kayhan Vaziri and Carter Wilson, power trio Coliseum have grown to become one of today's quintessential contemporary punk bands. Successfully melding progressive musicianship, hardcore fervor, and vital social awareness into one constantly evolving artistic vision.

Over the last decade Coliseum have released music on a host of labels including; Temporary Residence, Relapse, Level Plane, Auxiliary (Ryan’s own label), and Deathwish.

“Anxiety’s Kiss” is the new album from Coliseum, recorded at The Magpie Cage by producer/engineer J. Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines). “Anxiety’s Kiss” is a hook-laden maturation of the Coliseum sound. Nods to their early D-Beat leanings are there, but it is their willingness to embrace Post-Punk melody and explore the space between notes that make “Anxiety’s Kiss” so alluring. Confidently growing within the punk world, without ever leaving it behind.

“We Are The Water” kicks things off with a synth-driven stomp while lyrically serving as a poignant social awakening and call for human empathy. Amidst a tangle and twang of melody, “Course Correction” and “Wrong/Goodbye” then emerge to tackle the ripe subjects of class division and police brutality. “Drums & Amplifiers” picks up pace, taking on those who reflect on their punk past rather than absorb the spirit that still charges the air around us. It’s not all social and subcultural commentary though. The dizzying “Dark Light Of Seduction” and sultry “Sharp Fangs, Pale Flesh” (where J. Robbins guests performing the BulBul Tarang) are darkly provocative narratives about the power of lust and love. In soul and tone, they both interject an emotional underbelly to it all. Robbins also adds bass on “Comedown”, an industrial-tinged romp led by Vaziri’s baritone guitar and Wilson’s booming toms. Coincidentally, it is also the first Coliseum song ever recorded to not feature Patterson on guitar. “Sunlight in a Snowstorm” is the band at their most melodic, with a snow-covered New York City as its lyrical backdrop. The high beam lit, cinematic noir of “Driver at Dusk” and infectious, fuzzed-out “Escape Yr Skull” lastly descend to close out the album. A flawless, yin and yang pairing that is Coliseum at the peak of their experimental and anthemic powers.

MILES AWAY "Tide"

MILES AWAY "Tide"
CD - $4.75 / LP - $10.70 / CASSETTE - $4.75
SIX FEET UNDER / SFU098

RESTRICTIONS: AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND

A lot can happen in five years. For Miles Away the last five years have been spent growing, learning, touring, loving, celebrating and living. Five years ago, Miles Away released their last full-length album, "Endless Roads" and now they return with a new follow up LP titled, “Tide”.

Proving distance is no divide when it comes to songwriting, now Berlin based guitarist Adam Crowe collaborated electronically with Cam Jose on the song writing and structure for the new album, trading riffs and ideas via email. The process was slow going, not because of their residential locations, but due to a desire to fine tune the song writing process and produce a record they all can be proud of for years to come.

When it came to enlisting help to record, Miles Away, have a myriad of friends from all corners of the globe to call upon with former Defeater drummer Andy Reitz agreeing to lay down drum tracks on the album, while joining the band on bass is Adam's younger brother Jared Crowe of Perth outfit, The Others.

Together they entered Getaway Studios in Boston with producer Jay Maas during July/August 2014, with the end result then mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

Pitching in on backing vocals are Zach from Bane, Jake from Dreamtigers, Dahei from Japanese band Cleave and renowned Aussie crooner Jamie Hay who put in time with A Death In The Family, Pitfall and Conation.

In the years since their last full length album Miles Away have managed to refine their sound adding subtle new elements that build on the foundations found throughout their extensive back catalogue. Tracks like “Entitlement” and Port of Call” bring back memories of the bands very first release, the “Make It Count” EP, whilst the song “Grateful” has a real “Rewind, Repeat…” vibe. Other tracks from “Tide” such as “Terra Incognita” and “Mousetraps” would feel right at home upon the bands last full length “Endless Roads”.

Entering their thirteenth year as a band, Miles Away have produced an album that touches on themes such as gratitude and positive growth but also dismay at what they see in the world around today, all with a distinct Australian feel. Vocalist Nick Horsnell’s raw and isolated vocal delivery is once again present, with the band adding more vocal melody into the mix than ever before.

The artwork for “Tide” reflects the bands coastal West Australian roots with a sobering photo based insert brought to life by fellow sandgropers Mike Maxted & Adam Borello, with Tom Sweetman & Dick Smith handling layout duties.

"Tide" features eleven new tracks and is due out on May 5th through Six Feet Under Records in the US/Europe and through Resist Records in Australia.

ANCIENT HEADS "It Can't Rain Forever"

ANCIENT HEADS "It Can't Rain Forever"
7"EP - $4.10
REACT! / RXR047

Ancient Heads formed in Toronto in 2012 with a simple but ambitious goal: to play straight-edge hardcore that’s as direct as Floorpunch, as ineffably powerful as Chain of Strength, and as timeless and durable as both bands. Three years later, with the release of their debut EP, It Can’t Rain Forever, they’ve pulled it off. Seven real hardcore songs, riffs that won’t make you roll your eyes, mosh parts that deserve to be referred to as such, plainspoken lyrics that attest to the courage of the band’s convictions — you just don’t hear straight-edge records like this anymore. Violent bravado? Disingenuous politics? Adolescent melodrama? Never that. Ancient Heads is a band without insecurity or pretense, and It Can’t Rain Forever is a record that any hardcore kid with integrity and a sense of history will immediately recognize as the real thing.

ELVIS DEPRESSEDLY "New Alhambra"

ELVIS DEPRESSEDLY "New Alhambra"
LP - $13.75
RUN FOR COVER / RFC117

In many ways, new alhambra is an auditory homage to what has shaped lead singer Mathew Lee Cothran’s life. Its title, as any hardcore pro-wrestling fan will recognize, credits the Philadelphia arena that birthed its most legendary and extreme version of it, and the use of samples from wrestling shows and late night televangelists serve as a reference to his upbringing. The album was characteristically made with outdated equipment and limited by only one microphone, with Mike “Dr. Vink” Roberts playing an essential role on bass that enriches the rockier resonation in comparison to elvis depressedly’s previous releases. Cothran and Delaney were constantly on the move during the recording process thanks to their new found career freedom, but none of it takes away from new alhambra fully texturized shift toward brightly melancholic noise-pop inspired by Cothran’s favorite un- sung heroes such as Waterboys, Prefab Sprout and Emperor X.

RED DEATH "Permanent Exile"

RED DEATH "Permanent Exile"
LP - $11.25
GRAVE MISTAKE  / GRAVE076

In 2014, DC's RED DEATH came out of the gate and obliterated everyone with one of the best hardcore demos of the year. Their first recorded output channeled the sheer brutality and precision of crossover classics like Animosity and Cause for Alarm, without straying too far from the rawness and reckless abandon of hardcore punk. On their new LP, Permanent Exile, Red Death delivers exactly as we hope a band with a strong outset should - with an even more powerful and focused follow up release. While influences on Permanent Exile range from Negative Approach to The Accused to Anti-Cimex, one thing is made clearly evidently: Red Death are first and foremost a hardcore band. As hardcore and punk get more fractionalized each year, they are band that puts emphasis and importance on the music they are creating, rather than what scene they fit in or what uniform they are wearing. Permanent Exile is the record for those of us who appreciate every facet of hardcore, punk, and all genres in between, and that says a lot in 2015.

TURNOVER "Peripheral Vision"
LP - $13.75
RUN FOR COVER / RFC122

Virginia Beach’s Turnover has never been a band afraid of telling the truth. The emotional honesty poured out over a number of anthemic releases has been a proven formula of success for the band, but on their sophomore LP Peripheral Vision, the band treads into deeper water. Working again with Magnolia producer Will Yip (Title Fight, Circa Survive), Turnover’s latest record shows a band maturing to create their best effort: an ethereal, reverb-drenched soundscape blending elements of hazy dream pop and the delicate emo rock of yesteryear. Songs like “Hello Euphoria” and “Like Slow Disappearing” highlight the new calmer, more subdued approach to songwriting, matched by Austin Getz’s somber, confessional lyrics that echo throughout songs as if his words were haunting every measure. Peripheral Vision solidifies the idea that Turnover is a band with its finger on the pulse of its generation: growing and learning with every release, but never failing to provide a relatable, cathartic experience for anyone listening.

OLD MAN GLOOM "Mediations In B (2015 Remaster)"
LP $14.00
HYDRA HEAD / HH666-145

Meditations in B. A simpler time. Like Pepperidge Farms, and Little House on the Prairie. Two beautiful young men (Aaron Turner and Santos Montano) set off on their own, in the peak of their sexual virility, to forge a new path in brutally sludgy, crushing, apocalyptic, post-metal, post-hardcore, pre-Y2K, post-math, pre-friendster, post-rock riffs. It was a magical time, before they added a few "session players." Still regarded by some (mostly the guys who played on it) as Old Man Gloom's finest hour.

Fun fact: Meditations in B was written in one afternoon, then recorded AND mixed in 12 hours! While many things in this text are only kinda true, that is absolutely true. They also had the privilege of recording it in their home town of Santa Fe, New Mexico at Stepbridge Studios. Within months of this, they used this monumental piece of music to convince Nate Newton (Converge) to join, and once they had him, it was a little easier to convince Caleb Scofield (Cave In) to join. It's kinda like the beginning of Bill and Ted, where the talk about getting Eddie Van Halen to join, but won't be good until he joins, but can't get good ‘til he joins, to convince him to join. Get it? Fantastic.

STEEL NATION "The Harder They Fall"
CD - $10.00
MARKED FOR DEATH / MFD024

STEEL NATION began in April of 2005 in central Pennsylvania and has been a hardcore institution ever since. Ramping up the working person sensibilities of classic NYHC and Clevo hardcore, Steel Nation has a grit largely missing from punk today.

Proving that true creativity flourishes during adversity, Steel Nation has redefined the band on each release while overcoming personal obstacles that would have killed most acts. On its latest release, The Harder They Fall, the band offers a masters class in nuance. Straightforward hardcore bangers are given depth through smart playing that acknowledges the genre’s roots, but subtly moves the craft forward.

The follow up record. Sometimes, it can be every band's worst nightmare. The struggle to create a piece of material that can stand proudly beside a previously impressive debut is a real one. Luckily, for Pennsylvania rock band Superheaven, they seem to have figured it out. After spending the last few years on the road following the release of their outstanding 2013 debut Jar, Superheaven's highly anticipated new album Ours Is Chrome will be available everywhere on May 4.
Formed in 2007, Superheaven has spent the better part of the last five years honing in on their dark and desperate sound across four EPs, their massive full-length debut (Jar) and an almost endless touring cycle. Hard work is engrained in their ethos and plays a big role in the inspiration for Ours Is Chrome. Produced by Will Yip, Ours Is Chrome consists of eleven emotionally heavy songs that drift effortlessly between genres, channeling the band's insecurities and determination into a collection of material that are simultaneously confident and downcast.

DESCENDENTS "Filmage"
Blu Ray + DVD - $18.45
EPITAPH / FILMAGE001

“In the fall of 2010 we sat down for the first of more than 50 interviews and dozens of live shows in an attempt to tell the story of not only our favorite band, but also some of the most over-achieving and under-documented people in music history. Thirty-five years in 90 minutes. Phew,” co-director Matt Riggle said. Long before punk rock inflicted its puncture wound on the map of mainstream music, the Descendents were in a van brewing a potent mix of pop, angst, love and coffee and influencing a generation to come. The documentary follows drummer and square-peg Bill Stevenson as he pushes himself and a rotating door of band-mates to “achieve ALL,” his relentless concept of “going for greatness, the utmost possible” despite any and all setbacks.

This BONUS CUT edition of FILMAGE is packed with nearly 80 additional minutes of bonus content! Includes interviews, archival footage, live shows, tour stories, and band history that landed on the cutting room floor, along with two short films, “The Lombardo Short” (starring original bassist Tony Lombardo) and “The Stevenson Monologues,” which offers a deeper peek into the mind of Bill Stevenson as he sounds off on fashion, religion, high school, Milo and more.

This Blu-Ray/DVD is multi-region and has 4 available sub-titles in: English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

MINUS THE BEAR "Planet Of Ice (Remaster/Reissue)"
2xLP - $24.00
SUICIDE SQUEEZE / SSQ065

Following the success of Highly Refined Pirates' forward-thinking guitar gymnastics and Menos El Oso's groundbreaking glitch rock, Seattle's premier pop revisionists Minus The Bear dug into some of rock music's most ostentatious years for inspiration for their 2007 album, Planet of Ice. The title alone conjures images of Yes's Relayer album art, and the influence of the elder statesmen's symphonic scope can be felt throughout Planet of Ice's lush and intricate arrangements. You can also hear the band channel the ominous instrumental interplay of Lamb-era Genesis on "Dr. L'Ling", the deceptively savvy musicianship and pristine production of Steely Dan on "White Mystery", and the tightrope walk between ethereal space and pre-metal riffage of Pink Floyd's "Echoes" on "Lotus". Not that Minus The Bear completely abandoned their earlier style--elements of Menos El Oso's sample-driven technique can be heard on the lead single "Knights". But the heart of the song ultimately belongs to the haunting Fripp-esque guitar lines spliced between verses. After being out of print on record since 2010, Suicide Squeeze is proud to reintroduce Planet of Ice's creative marriage of classic motifs and modern musical wizardry with a vinyl remaster courtesy of Bernie Grundman.

THARSIS THEY "Formless/Shapeless"
7"EP - $5.00
DROPPING BOMBS / DB002

Building on their collective experiences from a decade or more of laying waste to the local Detroit underground, the members of Tharsis They formed in 2011 with the goal of creating their most sonically destructive unit yet. Drawing inspiration from classic late 90’s Hydra Head bands like Botch, Cave-In, Coalesce, etc., Tharsis has consistently upped the ante with both their debut 2012 LP “Ominous Silence” as well as last year’s scorching split 7” with The Armed. More ferocious than ever before, the band has teamed up with new label imprint Dropping Bombs to unleash "Formless/Shapeless", a brand new 7″ that continues to meld their razor-sharp precision with primal aggression. 4 songs, unlimited headbanging. As always, the record is available for free download at www.tharsisthey.bandcamp.com“

TINY ENGINES / TINYENG140

Before The Hotelier made a splash in 2014 with their sophomore release, Home, Like Noplace Is There, the band (as The Hotel Year) quietly released their cult classic debut full-length, It Never Goes Out, in 2011. The album was unfortunately kept in label limbo in regards to a proper physical release but the time has finally come to right that wrong. Tiny Engines will release It Never Goes Out on LP/CD with all new artwork in the Spring of 2015. A year after Home, Like Noplace Is There cemented the band, revisit where it all started with It Never Goes Out.
