Pet Points

July 2017

The summer of 2017 is in full swing now, and we hope you and your furry friends are enjoying it. Unfortunately summer also brings with it, nasty little insects like fleas and ticks. Scroll down for some products and tips about keeping these pests at bay. Also, in this issue we will introduce you to our new foster dog Maggie. And as always, if there is something you would like to see in a future newsletter, please send us an email

HOW TO GET RID OF FLEAS NATURALLY
Food grade Diatomaceious earth (DE) is a great natural alternative to chemical pesticides. Diatomaceous earth is composed of tiny organisms known as diatoms which have the ability to lacerate the exoskeletons of various types of insects and kill them through dehydration. DE is safe for use on both cats and dogs, however you must make sure you use "food grade" which is what we carry here at Pet Pointe.  You can apply the powder all over your pet making sure you do this when your dog or cat is dry. It is perfectly safe if ingested, and can be used as a food additive and eliminates whipworms, roundworms, pinworms and hookworms within 7 days of being fed daily. Feed DE for a minimum of 30 days to ensure all developing worms are destroyed. If you would like more information on DE, this site has lots of good information
In our March edition of Pet Points we introduced you to Pet Mix which is a natural flea and tick preventative.  Pet Mix is known as Tick Off in the U.S. and here is a great video showing how effective it is at repelling ticks.
If you do find a tick on your dog or cat, the safest way to remove it is with tweezers, or a tick removal device such as the Tick Key. There are many myths about the best way to remove a tick and most of these are not safe for either you or your pet.
  • DON’T … squish or crush a tick. This can force infected body fluids through the tick’s mouth and increase the risk of infection for you and your dog
  • DON’T … worry if the mouthpart of the tick stays in your dog’s skin. It can happen sometimes when they’re really well embedded. It’s a bit like having a splinter and it will fall out in a few days
  • DON’T … put substances like nail polish, vaseline or repellents on the tick to try to suffocate or kill it while it’s on your dog. This can cause the tick to vomit into your dog, increasing the possibility of infection
  • DON’T  … burn the tick with a lighted cigarette or hot match as these things can also cause vomiting
  • DON’T … dispose of the tick in your trashcan or sink as they can easily crawl back out

Meet Maggie an adoptable beagle
Maggie is our latest foster dog and she's a real sweetheart.  She was an owner surrender and appears to love everyone and every dog she meets. She is very low energy, and we are working on getting her to lose some weight. Maggie needs some encouragement when out on a walk, but once she gets going she walks very nicely on her leash. If you would like more information on Maggie, please contact A Dog's Dream Rescue
