Pet Points

July 2018

Buy Canadian! Many of us have decided to respond to the U.S. tariffs on Canadian products by trying to buy more Made in Canada items. At Pet Pointe we carry many high quality Canadian pet foods and treats. In this edition we will highlight some of those. We will also discuss some summer heat hazards that you should be aware of.  And as always, if there is anything you would like us to feature in a future newsletter, email us or drop in.

These are some of our favourite Canadian brands of pet food. We have more in store, and there is something for every budget.
At Petcurean, we create premium quality, nutrient-rich food that’s right for pets, to help our dogs and cats get the most out of their lives with us. We always have, since day one when two good friends started a little family operation in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada. They believed that pets deserved better. Today, being independent and privately owned, we can remain fiercely, single-mindedly devoted to pet nutrition, and nothing else. And with no shareholders to answer to, we are never asked to put profits before the health and well-being of pets. There’s something about having our head office surrounded by some of the most fertile ranching and farming lands in Canada that inspires us to craft the very best pet food we possibly can. We use only premium-quality, market-fresh meats, veggies, fruits and berries. And we’re very proud to report that all of our recipes are conceived, created and formulated right here in O Canada

Our recipes have all been certified to meet the standards set by AAFCO (Association Of American Feed Control Officials, Inc., the council which regulates the quality and safety of pet food in the United States) to be "Complete and Balanced for all life stages". Currently, we are the only Canadian made raw pet food which has managed to obtain this certification. All of the ingredients used in Pets 4 Life products are purchased from Canadian, federally inspected facilities. ALL of our meat, fish and poultry is Canadian raised or caught, and rated "AAA" or better. We use NO meat by products, off cuts or meals - in fact, our meat, fish and poultry cuts are not just 'human grade', they're restaurant quality. Our chicken is full backs and thighs, our salmon is fresh Pacific Coho filets, our rabbit and duck are free range full frames, our turkey are full necks and backs, our beef is quality stew cuts, and our lamb is fresh fronts.

The fact we self manufacture in Saskatchewan, Canada, source directly from growers locally and dismiss the notion of expensive marketing campaigns to obscure the quality standards of our foods like other foods do, we can 'pay forward' a superior grain free food at an unmatched price. We are so bold to say, we think very few food companies can deliver a food like Pulsar at a such a low price point like we can. Horizon starts with an emphasis on animal protein. Steroid free and growth hormone free chicken, turkey and wild caught salmon are the cornerstone proteins in Pulsar. The nutritional and energy benefits of pulses (legumes) are unquestioned. We supplement and round out the Pulsar formulations with choice fresh fruits and raw vegetables plus a breadth of vitamin, mineral, probiotic and prebiotic supplementation to significantly enhance the nutritional impact, digestibility and palatability of the food.

Every year we hear tragic stories about pets dying in hot cars. There are no excuses. Remember you may think you may only be a minute, but unexpected things can happen in a minute. One of the most common things that could happen in the Mystic Pointe area is that you get stuck in an elevator. If you can't take your pet with you when you leave the car, then don't bring your pet.
Summer heat can be very hard on your dog's paws. We are having an unseasonably hot summer so far this year and chances are your dog's paws are feeling it. If you think the pavement might be too hot for your dog to walk on, take the "5-second test" . Place the back of your hand on the pavement and if you can't keep it there for more than 5 seconds without feeling pain, then it is too hot for your dog. When out walking,  walk in shaded and grassy areas, and try not to go out for walks during the hottest part of the day. See below to get an idea of asphalt temperature during this summer heat.
Does your dog gulp his food? The Fun Feeder can solve that problem for you. This maze like feeder slows your dog's eating down which should also help improve digestion. The Fun Feeder can also be used to keep your dog engaged when leave them alone.
