Pet Points

August 2017

We are very excited to once again be participating in the annual Mystic Pointe Community Party taking place this year on Sunday, September 10 from noon to 3. This is the 4th time the Mystic Pointe Business Community has held this event, and for those of you who have not been before, it is a good time for the whole family. Make sure you bring your kids and pets.  In this newsletter, we will tell you a little more about what Pet Pointe will be featuring that day.  And as always, if there is something you would like to see in a future newsletter, please send us an email

Has your dog ever looked like it was having trouble breathing, and then within a minute or two everything seems fine?  Chances are it was a reverse sneeze.  As you can see from the video below, it can look quite scary, but in almost all cases it is nothing to worry about.
Reverse sneezing is fairly common in dogs, but is rarely seen in cats. Small and short nosed breeds are more prone to the condition than other dogs. In a regular sneeze, air is pushed out through the nose. In a reverse sneeze, air is instead pulled rapidly and noisily in through the nose. A dog who is reverse sneezing typically stands still with his elbows spread apart, head extended or back, eyes bulging as he makes this loud snorting sound. Our dog Amy is known to reverse sneeze when she gets overly excited, and we have found that if we block her nostrils with our hand, she will start breathing normally again.
As mentioned above, we are gearing up for the 4th Annual Mystic Pointe Community Party. This year we will have a representative from Open Farm Pet Food, sampling their certified humane dog and cat food. Canada Pooch will also be here with a sneak preview of their new styles and we will be offering discounts on any pre-ordered Canada Pooch merchandise. Those of you with older pets will want to come and meet a veterinarian from Midtown Mobile Veterinary Services. And the folks from Bark 'n Yapp will be here to tell you about their app that brings together dog owners, information, and resources to create a highly engaged community based on trust and peer reviewed content.
