Art of Presence:  Attunement and Advance Listening Skills
Rev. Dr. Carla Cheatham
Principal & Lead Trainer, Carla Cheatham Consulting Group, LLC

Learning to help those who are suffering can be a process. Knowing how to provide therapeutic space for them to process and clarify their emotions and not stepping in to fill in our own thoughts can be a challenge. This session will provide the opportunity to develop a sense of presence including deep listening, mindfulness, self-awareness and the use of silence. Rev. Dr. Cheatham will provide practical exercises and assessments to develop an increase in inter- and intra-personal competencies and skills in presence and empathetic attunement.

Living and Dying on the Tightrope of Aging: A Family Caregiver’s Perspective
Melanie Merriman, PhD, MBA
Touchstone Consulting

Hospice and palliative care providers first encounter patients and families at a time of crisis, but the patient and family have probably been dealing with their loved one’s physical and mental decline for months or even years. Melanie Merriman was a hospice professional who thought she was prepared for her mother’s decline. Instead she was humbled by the uncertainty she faced as a caregiver. In this presentation Melanie, author of the award-winning book, Holding the Net: Caring for My Mother on the Tightrope of Aging, will share what she learned about family caregiving, and will invite discussion among participants about good ways to assess what the patient and family understand—and how they feel—about the patient’s trajectory and prognosis.
