Former hospital director, physician’s assistant plead guilty in $1 billion Esformes fraud case
Two major players in a billion-dollar nursing home-related fraud case have pled guilty and could face years in prison. Former hospital leader Odette Barcha admitted in federal court Wednesday to conspiring to defraud the government, and to both paying out and receiving healthcare kickbacks. Barcha was part of a massive fraud scheme, along with Miami Beach businessman Philip Esformes, which involved improper billing and patient placement at more than 30 Miami-area nursing homes and assisted living facilities. 

MedPAC Unanimously Calls for $2 Billion in Skilled Nursing Payment Cuts in 2020
After floating a proposed recommendation to slash nursing homes’ Medicare reimbursements for fiscal 2020, a leading legislative voice on health care issues made it final last week. The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) called on Congress to reduce funding for skilled nursing facilities by up to $2 billion in the next fiscal year, citing sufficient existing margins on Medicare services and upcoming changes to therapy reimbursements under the Patient-Driven Payment Model. 

Employers Need to Address ‘Caregiving Crisis,’ Study Finds
A new study by a pair of Harvard Business School researchers finds that employers underestimate, to their detriment, the struggle their employees face in balancing their professional and caregiving responsibilities. Almost three quarters of U.S. workers face some kind of caregiving responsibility, they found. 

Overcoming Barriers to Growth in Home-Based Palliative Care
Now is a better time than ever for home health agencies, hospice providers and other organizations to invest in and grow their home-based palliative care offerings. Yet certain barriers may still be holding them back. Although need for palliative care is skyrocketing, common barriers to entry include sustainable financing and quality standards.

Hospital groups open to a few CON changes; critics say more needed
As Georgia lawmakers push to revamp health care regulations, two major hospital groups have proposed some revisions to the state certificate-of-need system. Those proposals stemmed from months of hospital officials’ discussions on CON, which the industry has relentlessly defended for years in the Georgia General Assembly.
