Legislative Roundup: What You Need to Know

Medical Marijuana
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) is working on a bill to loosen federal restrictions on medical marijuana research and end the Department of Veterans Affairs’ long-standing “gag rule” on alerting veterans about medical marijuana research trials near them.

Opioid Update
Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto considered her controlled substance/opioid legislation in the Senate Rules Committee. This is a big priority for Governor Rick Scott and proposes to limit initial opioid prescriptions for acute pain to 3 days and 7 days if medically necessary. It passed unanimously and was followed by comments that she is continuing to work with stakeholders to address specific concerns, possibly with carveouts, that relate to patients that have suffered traumatic injuries or undergone major surgeries.

House Tax Package
In total, the House tax package is about $350 million. Items included range from disaster preparedness days, a .3% reduction for business rent tax, as well as a proposed 10-day sales tax holiday in August where shoppers would not pay taxes on school supplies and clothes. It also includes a new source of money for one of the nation's largest private school voucher programs. Additionally, the House tax package does not include Gov. Scott’s call to cut the fees charged to get a driver’s license in our state.
