Developing Collaborative Partnerships with Nursing Facilities

Speaker: Cherry Meier, VITAS Healthcare

Licensing and certification requirements for the hospice provider/nursing facility partnership were published in 2013. There has been limited surveyor scrutiny of the relationship due to the absence of the surveyor interpretative guidance. However, the guidance was published in the Nursing Home Mega Rule and implement November 28, 2017. This presentation will discuss the changes that nursing home providers are experiencing and the impact on expectations of care from a hospice provider.

Children and Grief

Speaker: Caitlin Burns, LCSW,  Big Bend Hospice

“Mister” Fred Rogers once said, “…anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable.” Adults often want to protect young people from difficulties and pain but loss and trauma do not have a minimum age requirement. Even children need safe outlets to learn how to manage grief. This session will identify the unique needs of grieving young people, discuss potential barriers and challenges to providing support and offer sample interventions for engaging with grieving youth in multiple settings.

Enhancing Well-Being for People Living with Dementia – Opening Plenary

Speaker: Dr. G. Allen Power

Dr. Power will explain the drawbacks of a narrow biomedical view of dementia and offer an alternative, “experiential” model. He will present a framework for well-being and create a pathway for a proactive approach to support and care, addressing the need to transform several aspects of the care environment in order to meet the changing needs of individuals living with dementia. Through sustainable results, this method addresses distress and reduces potentially dangerous medications, regardless the type of dementia or where the person lives.
