Lights for the Fields at North!

Dear Families —

It is an exciting time to be a Newton North Tiger! After a spring sports season that saw a return to (mostly) normal competition, our community is finally moving forward with plans to put lights on the field and track of Dickinson Stadium. This could not come at a more critical time.

As you know, Newton Public Schools recently changed the high school start time, resulting in a 3:45pm dismissal. As such, our student-athletes have been and will be missing a disproportionate amount of academic time in order for competitions to finish before dark. A lighted stadium will go a long way to mitigate this issue. Further, adding lights will allow more teams to practice which will help address the many sport and gender equity issues that arise in a large athletic program with only one turf field.

We all have fond memories of the excitement of playing or spectating under the lights for that one special week each fall when North brings in temporary lighting. To be able to extend this throughout the school year — with new light technology that is quiet, clean, and creates virtually no light pollution — will help foster the school community and Tiger Pride that has for so long been part of the Newton North culture.

This fall we will be launching a capital campaign to raise the funds necessary to complete this project. We invite you to join us in this important endeavor – as a volunteer fundraiser or a donor … or both! If you are interested in joining our efforts, please email Joanna and Billy and let us know. We look forward to working together to achieve our goals.
