A New Year’s Eve Message
from Police Chief Lloyd Martley
If you are going out for New Year's Eve gathering to celebrate and leaving your home unattended, be sure to lock all your windows and doors, leave a light on and ask neighbors to keep an eye out for anyone suspicious. Residents often leave their homes for extended periods of time on New Year's Eve and burglars may take advantage of this opportunity.
While out, be careful what you post online. Don't alert others that you are not at home. If you are headed out to a bar or nightclub, it is a good idea to carry only small amounts of cash, and only carry what credit card you may need. If you lose your purse or wallet, it may be unlikely your money and credit cards will be recovered.
Please drink responsibly and be careful not to leave your drink unattended. Stay in groups and have at least one designated sober driver in the group. Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol and have a plan for how you will get home. The consequences of impaired driving are much worse than the cost of a taxi.
Drivers should also be extra aware of their surroundings. An intoxicated pedestrian may step in front of your vehicle just as easily as a drunk driver might cause a collision.
Also, remember that it is illegal to discharge fireworks in Basehor on New Year’s Eve in addition to being a fire hazard.
"Thank you for planning a safe December 31st. The
Basehor Police Department looks forward to continuing to serve you in 2018."
