Dear ICN reader,

The freedom of expression that America guarantees is admired around the world, and people seek the safety of our shores because of it. It is one of the things that makes America great in the eyes of people everywhere.

Yet let’s not pretend otherwise: The First Amendment is in the President-elect’s crosshairs. He’s not interested in having a watchdog watching him. A fundamental pillar of American democracy is under attack.

Yet even before the President-elect uttered his threats and insults against the media, our free press was badly battered by a decade of financial crisis. The numbers are stark: In 2007, there were 55,000 journalists employed at more than 1400 US news outlets. Last year the number dropped to 33,000 and continues to decline.

No wonder so many Americans are misinformed about climate change, and so many other important issues facing this country. Please help us withstand this crisis, and the onslaught of misguided executive power and fake news.

This kind of journalism needs you.
