Mandatory Organics Collection:
Is Your Business Affected?

Alameda County’s Mandatory Recycling Ordinance now requires most businesses to subscribe to organics collection services and keep compostables out of the trash. What this means for you depends on the following:
Business location: If your business is located in Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Castro Valley, Emeryville, Hayward, Livermore, Piedmont or unincorporated Alameda County, the organics collection requirements apply to you! Oakland and San Leandro businesses will have the same requirements effective July 1, 2016. Click here for details about the requirements in your city.
Amount of organics generated: The Ordinance prohibits the disposal of any food scraps or compostable paper in the garbage. However, currently only businesses that generate a *significant* quantity of organics are required to have separate collection service. Organics include food prep trimmings, spoiled or contaminated food, plate waste, paper towels and napkins and other compostable materials.
How much is "significant"?
Take a look in your garbage bin or cart the day before collection day. If you meet the following thresholds in one or more of your garbage bins/carts, you must have organics service and keep compostables out of the trash:

In a garbage bin: 20 gallons (four 5-gal buckets) or more organics

In a garbage cart: 10 gallons (think two 5-gal buckets) or more organics

NOTE: The Ordinance also requires property owners and managers to remind employees, tenants and contractors at least once a year how to properly sort recyclables and compostables. Download a template letter to get started.
