Security + Update Announcements 🚨

Here are a few security news items to be mindful of:
  • Django security releases issued for 4.0.4, 3.2.13, and 2.2.28. Plus, all Django 2.2 users are encouraged to upgrade to Django 3.2 or later. (via Django)
  • Script kiddies and elite hackers bypass multifactor authentication (MFA). Read which types of MFA are more resilient to bad actors like Lapsus$ and SolarWinds. (via Ars Technica)
  • Oracle recently patched a vulnerability in Java versions 15 and above that made it easy for adversaries to forge TLS certificates and signatures, two-factor authentication messages, and authorization credentials. (via Ars Technica)
  • Lenovo released security updates for more than 100 laptop models to fix critical vulnerabilities that make it possible for advanced hackers to surreptitiously install malicious firmware that can be next to impossible to remove or detect. (via Ars Technica)

What's New at Six Feet Up 📣

What's on Our Minds 🤔

Library We Love: Django Knox Tokens

Who else ❤️s Django?! Django REST Framework is a great solution for developing front-end heavy websites. It's loved for its reusability across projects and how it integrates with other libraries within the Django ecosystem, but it isn’t always the right fit — especially when it comes to authentication. Learn how Django Knox Tokens can address limitations and provide the simplest solution for what can easily become a very complex issue.

Updating a Custom GCP and Pyramid Sales Program

National Property Valuation Advisors (NPVA) is one of the largest independent commercial real estate valuation and advisory firms in the nation. Its proprietary, cloud-hosted, mission-critical application — built with Pyramid — manages everything from contracts to evaluations, employee assignments and more. 💪 Read the case study to learn how Six Feet Up provided development and deployment services and implemented new features to simplify the day-to-day management of the application.

To pyenv or Not To pyenv, That is The Question

Simple Python Version Management (pyenv) can be a great solution for developers wanting to easily switch between multiple versions of Python, but it's not perfect. Learn the benefits and steps for installing pyenv without letting it take over your shell's environment. 🙌

Projects on Deck 👷‍♀️

What's been keeping us busy this month:
  • A major battery energy storage systems company currently uses spreadsheets to develop and refine the configuration of multimillion-dollar battery installations. We’re helping replace these spreadsheets with a Django application — the first of several integrated applications that will be used by other business units. Additionally, we’ve begun the technical planning for a Django pricing tool that will generate quotes.
  • We helped FLASH Scientific Technology move a set of long-running data ingestion processes from AWS Lambda to AWS ECS Fargate which resulted in a better workload/platform fit and reduced costs. Read more about what it costs to run an AWS Lambda Function all day every day
  • We are helping a private air travel company fix mission-critical bugs in their current stack. As the new backend comes to life, we will help the client migrate from their current setup to the new version.
Can we help you out? Read about some of our recent projects.

Cal's Cool Tools 🧰

Latest cool finds from our CTO Calvin Hendryx-Parker:
  • Calvin’s Setup: I just set up a fresh machine, and I’m really liking chezmoi. I have a run once script setup that installs homebrew and then brew installs all my tools. My kitty search kitten is installed with .chezmoiexternal.toml.
  • Lens: Learn more about the largest and most advanced Kubernetes platform out there.
  • Recorder: Record, replay and measure user flows with the Recorder panel in Google DevTools.
  • 'pip install clean-text':  If you need to clean data scraped from the web, check out the clean-text Python package.
  • `networkQuality`: macOS has a built-in command that will test your upload/download speed.
  • Universal Control: Use the keyboard, mouse or trackpad of your Mac to control up to two other nearby Mac or iPad devices — and work seamlessly between them.
