Health & Safety Standards Institute Offers “Advanced-Level Learning” and “Sharp Focus on Critical Issues”

The Forum’s 5th Annual Standards of Good Practice Institute, "Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management," will be held at the University of Denver in Colorado on June 20, 2014. There is still time to register!
This annual Standards Institute offers practical strategies and resources at an advanced level, and includes sessions that are led by experts from within and outside of the education abroad field. Critical issues will be addressed this year, including state regulation of study abroad, increased number of travel warnings and how to vet program providers.
Read what colleagues had to say about last year’s Institute, held in June 2013 at the University of California, Santa Barbara:
“This year's Standards Institute truly went beyond the basics. By including speakers and planning committee members from outside the field there was added expertise, value and substance, nicely complementing the already strong contributions of Forum members.” Lili Batchelder, Lodestone Safety International
“The Institute is an opportunity for advanced-level learning and connecting with colleagues dealing with the same issues.” Beth Kilinc, University of New Hampshire
“The Institute provided a valuable opportunity to bring sharp focus to critical issues and challenges.” Jeannie B. Simmons, The Ohio State University

Start Certification Now!

The Forum will deliver two workshops at the University of Denver that also serve as required modules in the Forum Certification in Education Abroad program. Both workshops will be offered on June 19, and will focus on Standards 4 and 5 (Student Preparation for the Learning Environment Abroad and Returning Student Support) and Standard 8 (Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management) of The Standards of Good Practice.

The Standards of Good Practice Institute on health and safety will be held on the following day, June 20. Colleagues may register for one or both of the workshops, or may add them to their registration for the Standards Institute. Click here for more details.

Early-bird registration for the Forum’s Second European Conference will open on Thursday, June 5. “What Does it Mean to be a "Traditional" Destination? Challenges & Opportunities for Education Abroad in Europe” will be held October 23-25, 2014, at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

Submit Nominations for the Undergraduate Research Award

The deadline to submit nominations for the 2014 Undergraduate Research Award is Friday, June 20.

The Forum Undergraduate Research Award is an honor that showcases undergraduate research that occurs as part of education abroad programs. Award projects encompass a wide variety of academic disciplines, demonstrating that international learning informs many academic and professional fields. The awards validate students' understanding of other cultures and societies. Additional details and nomination instructions can be found at
Every year, award recipients are invited (all expenses paid) to present their research at a plenary luncheon at the annual Forum conference. Over the years, the student presentations have become a much-anticipated event!

A number of video interviews conducted at the Forum’s Annual Conference have been added to the Curriculum Cooperative.  Log in to the site to listen to colleagues speak about their individual approaches to education abroad curriculum design, and to access profiles of education abroad courses, programs, and initiatives from Forum member organizations.
In this sample clip, Patti Brown of IFSA-Butler encourages us to do what we ask of our students:
