Call for Proposals: Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management

The Forum on Education Abroad announces a call for session proposals for the 7th Annual Standards of Good Practice Institute, Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management, to be held at Northwestern University on June 23, 2016. 
Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management is education abroad’s signature annual event focusing on the education abroad risk management issues faced daily by organizations and institutions. Education abroad professionals gather each year at this Standards Institute to debrief, train, improve and learn the latest in best practices of education abroad risk management, including regulatory compliance.

The deadline for submitting proposals is January 15, 2016.

Special Message from APUAF/ Webinar on Safety and Security

The Forum is pleased to alert members to a message from the Association des Programmes Universitaires Américains en France (APUAF) in response to the recent tragedy in Paris. Click here to read the statement.
The Forum is planning to convene a webinar in January to discuss and share lessons learned as a result of the attacks in Paris in order to assist member institutions to improve their emergency management protocols. Details will be announced in the near future.

Make Yourself Heard in 2015: State of the Field Survey Deadline

Respond to the 2015 State of the Field survey, and make your voice heard here at The Forum and across the globe. The data on education abroad practices collected from the State of the Field surveys allows us to identify and improve current practices and advocate for education abroad with legislators and campus administrators. It is also an essential source of information for The Forum when planning and developing new resources because it communicates to us what you really need. If you haven’t already done so, please take a few minutes to complete the 2015 State of the Field survey (check your inbox for the invitation) before Tuesday, December 8. Don’t miss this opportunity! Forum Makes Available Special Funding for QUIP

The Forum is pleased to announce a specially-funded opportunity for member institutions to participate in a Quality Improvement Program (QUIP) review. Selected institutions must commit to complete the QUIP reviews during the 2016 calendar year, and they will pay only a $500 fee and assume no other costs for the reviews, which include peer review site visits.
The deadline to apply is January 15, 2016.

IES Abroad Earns QUIP Interim Report Recognition

The Forum is pleased to announce that IES Abroad’s QUIP Interim Report has been approved by The Forum Review Panel. The Forum recognizes IES for continuing to be in substantial conformity with the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad, and for demonstrating a continued commitment to quality improvement.

In Memoriam: John Rassias

The Forum has learned the very sad news that John Rassias, memorable keynote speaker at The Forum’s 6th Annual Conference in Boston, passed away on December 2. An internationally renowned language teacher and educator, Rassias played a major role throughout his life to advance language learning and intercultural understanding. The Forum extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of John Rassias.

Deadline Approaches: Annual Conference Grant and Award Opportunities

The Forum is pleased to offer two opportunities to help defray the costs of attending The Forum’s 12th Annual Conference in Atlanta. Education abroad professionals from Forum member institutions are invited to apply to receive a conference travel grant. Selection will be based on need and demonstrated benefit from attending the conferenceGrant awards are limited and can be expected to range from $200 to $500. The deadline to apply is today, December 4.
The Ron Koehn Conference Grant Award is given to faculty members or education abroad colleagues who have been especially effective in contributing to innovations in education abroad program design. The award is named in honor of long-time education abroad innovator, Ron Koehn, who has played a significant role in advancing the education abroad field. The deadline to apply is December 11.

Fireside Dialogue: Inclusive Excellence in Education Abroad

The Forum is pleased to offer a Fireside Dialogue to be held in conjunction with its 12th Annual Conference in Atlanta in April 2016. Inclusive Excellence in Education Abroad is intended for education abroad professionals seeking to assist the field to meet its diversity goals by focusing on the more encompassing concept of Inclusive Excellence. 

The Forum’s Fireside Dialogues foster in-depth, collegial discussion that leads to practical solutions that help to advance The Forum and the field as a whole. This Fireside Dialogue will bring together no more than 25 participants committed to exploration of this important topic, and will be facilitated by members of The Forum’s Working Group on Inclusive Excellence.

To support access to the event, The Forum will underwrite the cost of participation. Accepted participants will be responsible only for their accommodations and transportation.

The application deadline is January 15, 2016.

Standards of Good Practice Workshops in Conjunction with WISE Conference

The Forum will host Standards of Good Practice Workshops in Winston-Salem, NC, on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. The workshops are being held in conjunction with the WISE Conference on intercultural skills development. In the morning, join Overview of the Standards of Good Practice and learn to assess and ensure quality in all areas of education abroad programming. The second workshop will be offered in the afternoon and will focus on Student Selection, Preparation, Code of Conduct & Returning Support (Standards 4 & 5).

European Colleagues: Register for Forum Workshops in Barcelona

On February 5, 2016, The Forum will host Standards Workshops at the CEA Study Abroad – Barcelona Center. The first workshop in the morning will focus on Student Learning, Development and Academic Framework (Standards 2 & 3) and will help you to identify the resources and design programming to assist in this effort. The afternoon workshop is on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management (Standard 8), will provide the tools to assess and improve health and safety protocols. Standards of Good Practice Workshop at Arizona State University

The Forum will deliver the half-day workshop, Overview of the Standards of Good Practice, on February 8, 2016, on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. The Forum’s Standards provide a means to assess and ensure quality in all areas of education abroad programming - academic programming, student conduct, resources and personnel and policies and procedures. Using the Standards as a guide, participants will examine practices at their universities or organizations. This workshop will be highly interactive, drawing on case studies and issues of interest to participants.
