Clarifying Study Abroad Enrollment: Call for Comments

Forum President and CEO Brian Whalen participated recently in a U.S. Department of Education IPEDS Technical Review Panel along with other education abroad colleagues and representatives from U.S. higher education. The goal of Technical Review Panel #47, “Clarifying Study Abroad Enrollment” was to consider clarifications to the definition of study abroad programs, provide suggestions for understanding better various situations of study abroad, and recommend clear guidelines for counting study abroad students in the affected IPEDS survey components.

The Technical Review Panel’s suggestions are posted online and are currently open for public comment. The Forum encourages its members to review these and send any comments to Janice Kelly-Reid, IPEDS Project Director at RTI International, at ipedsTRPcomment@rti.org. Comments are due by September 10, 2015.

Call for Proposals: 12th Annual Conference

Education abroad is a field of intersections. In every program, different national identities, learning models, values, disciplines, languages, traditions, institutions and organizations encounter each other in distinctive ways that create the unique cultures of education abroad.

For example, the student’s home culture intersects with the host country culture at many different levels in any number of circumstances in the host community. In the academic context, student expectations regarding pedagogy and class participation should intersect with faculty expectations. How can we ensure that the expectations of all stakeholders intersect in ways that allow students to make the most of their education abroad experience?

The Forum’s 12th Annual Conference, Navigating the Intersections: The Cultures of Education Abroad, seeks to address these and other questions unique to education abroad. Proposals are due by Friday, September 4.
