The Forum’s 3rd European Conference


The Forum’s 3rd European Conference in Athens was a great success! The conference, Living Change: Education Abroad in 21st Century Europe, was hosted by CYA last week and welcomed 350 attendees.

The Forum thanks all of the colleagues who dedicated their time to making the conference a success, including attendees, session presenters, the conference committee, the European associations, and especially host institution, CYA.

Conference session presentations and materials are being uploaded to The Forum website as they become available. Attendees are reminded to complete the session and conference evaluations that were distributed via email. A summary of the conference evaluations will be reported within the next couple weeks. Look for a Request for Proposals to host the next European Conference in fall 2018 to be made available soon.

Forum Webinar: Applying the Undergraduate Global Health Programs Guidelines

Applying the Standards of Good Practice to international experiences in global health and clinical internships requires unique considerations and expertise. Experts in global health programs, Jessica Evert, MD, and Tricia Todd, MPH, will lead participants through a close look at the Undergraduate Global Health Program Guidelines, which have been specifically created to assist with developing programs for students engaged in health-related programs abroad. Participants will learn how to utilize the Guidelines when developing programs and to advise students interested in experiences abroad, with a special focus on strategies for exploring students’ motivations. Our experts will be joined by international education leader, Scott Daby, to discuss strategies for study abroad offices to work with pre-health advising and career coaching offices on campus.

Join the Data Committee


The Forum’s Data Committee is seeking new members. The Data Committee collects quantitative and qualitative data about education abroad, including data about student participation, program characteristics, and issues and topics in the field, including the biennial State of the Field Survey. These data are then used to create reports and resources for Forum members and the field at large.
 
To join, complete the online interest form. Preference will be given to those who apply before October 20.

Nominate a Colleague for the Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award


The Forum’s Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award honors a Forum member who has been remarkably effective in influencing institutions of higher learning to understand and support education abroad through the dissemination of The Forum's goals: standards of good practice, data collection and research, curricular development and academic design, and assessment. The 2017 award will be presented at the 13th Annual Conference in Seattle, WA. Previous winners include Joe Brockington (2016), Michael Steinberg (2015), Liam Ó Dochartaigh (2013), Jon Booth (2012), Michael Vande Berg (2012), Susan Pugh (2011), James Langridge (2010), David Larsen (2008), R. Michael Paige (2007), and Peter Wollitzer.
 
The deadline to nominate a deserving colleague for the 2017 Wollitzer Award is December 16.

Annual Conference Grant and Award Opportunities


The Forum is pleased to offer two opportunities to help defray the costs of attending The Forum’s 13th Annual Conference in Seattle. Education abroad professionals from Forum member institutions are invited to apply to receive a conference travel grant. Selection will be based on need and demonstrated benefit from attending the conference. Grant awards are limited and can be expected to range from $200 to $500. The deadline to apply is December 2.
 
The Ron Koehn Conference Grant Award is given to faculty members or education abroad colleagues who have been especially effective in contributing to innovations in education abroad program design. The award is named in honor of long-time education abroad innovator, Ron Koehn, who has played a significant role in advancing the education abroad field. Award winners receive a stipend that helps to underwrite the costs of their attendance at The Forum’s Annual Conference. The deadline to apply is December 2.

The 13th Annual Conference, Creating and Sustaining the Education Abroad Continuum, will take place in Seattle, WA, March 29-31, 2017 at The Westin Seattle. Registration for the conference will open on October 27.
