The deadline for Forum member institutional representatives to vote in the 2020 Forum Council election is 5 p.m. on Friday, May 22. Propose a Book Project for Our New Series: Standards in Action


We’re looking for innovative approaches and fresh perspectives on essential topics in our field that use the 6th Edition of the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad as their guide and jumping off point. Priority deadline for consideration is July 1.

Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad (6th Edition) Now Available


The 6th Edition of the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad is now available. The release of the new version of the Standards also includes a companion publication, Meeting the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad: Prompts for Self-Assessment which serves to enhance users’ experience with the Standards.
 
This 6th Edition of the Standards includes updated guidance on a number of key issues including:
  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Collaboration and Transparency
  • Post-Program Integration
Forum Institutional Representatives and 2020 Conference Participants will receive physical copies in the mail. In the meantime, we encourage you to download the 6th Edition of the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad and companion publication Meeting the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad: Prompts for Self-Assessment, or access them on the Forum website. Additional physical copies of both publications will be available for purchase later in May.

16th Annual Conference Sessions Available On Demand


Sessions from the 16th Annual Conference (held virtually April 21-23) are now available On-Demand for registered participants. Please login and select “On Demand Video” from the menu at the top of the page. 
 
Sessions and the Virtual Exhibit Hall will be available through July 30.
 
Colleagues who did not register to attend the virtual conference may still purchase access to the On-Demand recordings. Packages of recordings will be available for purchase soon.

Top 5 Forum Conference Takeaways


The Forum appreciates everyone who presented and attended our first-ever virtual conference. This was a true learning experience and we were excited to receive positive feedback from so many of you. The following “Top 5 Forum Conference Takeaways” are from CIS Abroad’s Newsletter and highlight many of the key items learned about The Forum’s virtual conference.
  1. Having meaningful discussions IS possible virtually.
  2. The discussion and innovation happening as a result of this challenging time for our field are inspiring and exciting.
  3. Creative zoom backgrounds make things so much more interesting.
  4. At the end of the day, we may need to recognize that some student mobility is NOT sustainable, and look for ways to help create global experiences for students without flying around the globe. The challenge is figuring out how to measure which programs are "worth it" and how to advocate for the value of international travel while also not dismissing the very real environmental impact it has.   5. The conference set up (open for 90 days) allows attendees to visit sessions that they didn’t get to engage with live, and revisit sessions they want to hear again. Thus, creating more room and time for learning from each other, developing new ideas, and broadening networks.

Standards of Good Practice Institute to be Held Virtually: Best Practices for Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management


The Forum will convene the Standards Institute on June 18, 2020 using a virtual platform.  The Institute Planning Committee is working hard to make sure that the high-quality sessions attendees are accustomed to will still be presented.  Please mark your calendars for this highly informative event that promises to deliver much needed expertise on risk management, health and safety. 2020 Professional Certification Accelerated Residency: Now Virtual


This year’s Accelerated Residency features six brand new workshops! Become one of the most knowledgeable members of the field by diving into the exciting new 6th edition of the Standards of Good Practice!
 
The 2020 Accelerated Residency will take place virtually June 24 - July 1. Each day a new workshop will be offered live from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. EDT. Participants will collaborate and interact in a live virtual environment with colleagues across the U.S. and internationally. No workshops will be offered over the weekend. Networking opportunities and small group work will make the virtual environment engaging and rewarding.
 
If you have always wanted to focus on your professional development but did not have the time or support, take advantage of this unique opportunity to develop new skills that will increase your effectiveness and grow your professional network! For colleagues recently separated from a Forum Member Organization, the member rate is available through our COVID-19 Crisis Recovery Program.

Apply to Become a Forum Trained Facilitator or Certification Assessor

 
The Forum seeks experienced professionals in the field of education abroad to serve as Forum Trained Facilitators and Forum Certification Assessors for the Professional Certification in Education Abroad Program. Becoming a Forum Trained Facilitator or an Assessor is an excellent way to give back to the field, maintain your Certification, and to advance your own professional development.

Facilitators deliver Standards Workshops around the country and around the globe. These workshops are a primary way that the Standards of Good Practice are disseminated to the field. Facilitators are chosen based on their education abroad experience, skill at facilitating interactive learning experiences, and their demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Standards of Good Practice.

Assessors are trained to review and evaluate Standards Assignments submitted by program participants.

Facilitators and Assessors must currently be Certified Professionals in Education Abroad or willing to complete the Professional Certification in Education Abroad program within one year after their selection (program fee to be paid by The Forum).

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 15.

Forum COVID-19 Crisis Recovery Program


To support our colleagues during the COVID-19 crisis, The Forum invites education abroad professionals who have experienced job loss as a result of the pandemic to apply for complimentary individual membership. To qualify, the individual must have been employed by a Forum member institution in good standing at the time of separation, and separation must occur between January 1, 2020 – December 31, 2020 for the individual to be eligible. Membership will begin on the date the applicant is notified of acceptance and will continue until June 30, 2021. Additional benefits and services may be available throughout this period, including Annual Conference scholarships, Forum Fellowships, and member rates to attend Forum events and professional development opportunities.

New Virtual Workshops

 
The Forum is pleased to announce that it will offer a series of Virtual Workshops in May and June. Use this time to advance your career from the comfort of your office or home by gaining new valuable skills through these engaging online sessions. The workshops cover a variety of important topics including Mental Health in Education Abroad; Health, Safety and Risk Management; and Student Selection, Preparation, Code of Conduct and Returning Support.
Mental Health Issues in Education Abroad
Wednesday, May 20-Thursday, May 21

The goal of this workshop is to assist participants in developing experience in handling mental health issues that may arise with students on an education abroad experience. This workshop will review trends in college mental health with specific focus on high risk behaviors, identify certain mental health reactions to stress that can be problematic, discuss and explore philosophical, legal, and practical concerns.
Student Selection, Preparation, Code of Conduct & Returning Support
Friday, June 5

This workshop focuses on Student Selection, Preparation, Code of Conduct and Returning Support and will help you to identify resources and design programming to assist in this effort. Time will be devoted to the presentation and explanation of a comprehensive judicial screening process. Participants will critically examine different preparation and returning support models and will develop strategies to improve upon them so that they might be useful in their specific context.
Health, Safety, Security & Risk Management
Friday, June 5

This workshop, with a focus on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management, can provide you with the tools you need to do just that. After examining the data available (including The Forum’s Critical Incident Database), workshop participants will consider how this specific Standard works in conjunction with the other Standards to guide programs in developing a solid risk management plan. Participants will practice applying three different approaches to risk management as they discuss actual case studies from the field.

New Title IX Regulations


Just this week, the U.S. federal government released the new Title IX Regulations. These Regulations are substantial and may require changes to current practice. Our colleagues at the SUNY Student Conduct Institute have partnered with legal experts in higher education to produce Joint Guidance on Federal Title IX Regulations.
