AIFS/AIFS Foundation Education Abroad Special Collection: New Acquisition

The Forum is pleased to announce a donation from Mary-Elizabeth Gwin Debicki, who served as the Director of Study Abroad at the University of Kansas from 1986-1996. Mary-Elizabeth writes:
“I am proud and humbled to be offering a copy of my 1985 Ph.D. Dissertation from the University of Mississippi, on the uses of computer-assisted advising by candidates for study abroad.
Along with this, I offer my SECUSSA cap, decorated with pins, which many of us wore in the early 1980s at meetings of the [Section on U.S. Students Abroad] at meetings of NAFSA around the country.
I donate both of these in honor of Mary Anne Grant, former President and CEO of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and current [Chair of the Board of Directors] of The Forum.”

Resources for Your Week:
End-of-Year Updates

Remind Your Students to Travel with Caution over the Holidays and in the New Year
The U.S. Department of State’s travel alert for Europe is still in effect. Remind your students to exercise caution when traveling throughout Europe and elsewhere this holiday season. Now is also a good time to remind students and faculty preparing for January term or spring semester education abroad to visit to sign up for STEP services and get the latest information about their destination. Students and education abroad faculty and staff should also follow the State Department on Facebook and Twitter (@TravelGov) to receive the latest travel alerts and warnings via social media.
Bipartisan DACA Bill Introduced
Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) introduced the Bridge Act last week to extend protections and work permits for immigrants currently protected under the DACA executive order. If you feel strongly about protections for Dreamer students, contact your senator and voice your support for this bill. Also, read the previous edition of Resources for Your Week for more DACA resources.
FY 2017 Continuing Resolution Passed by Congress
Last Friday, Congress passed FY 2017 CY to extend most federal government programs, including Fulbright-Hayes, at FY 2016 levels. This CR is in keeping with the Coalition for International Education’s June 2016 advocacy efforts, which The Forum supported, but is only effective until April 28, 2017. By then, the new administration and Congress will have to finalize FY budget levels. While the current House bill maintains funding levels for these programs, the Senate bill would cut Fulbright-Hayes funding by 69%.
