Standards Institute: Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management

Don’t miss early-bird registration for the Standards of Good Practice Institute, "Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management.” The Standards Institute will be held at the University of Denver in Colorado on June 20, 2014, immediately preceding NACUA's Annual Conference. Click here to take advantage of the early-bird registration rate, which ends on May 2.

This year’s Institute promises new presenters and new topics for consideration by those concerned with issues of health, safety, security and risk management specific to education abroad. As in previous years, the Institute offers practical strategies and resources at an advanced level, and many of these sessions will be provided by experts in other fields.

Session Spotlight

Risk Management: The Traumatic Aftermath
William Marling (National Organization for Victim Assistance)
This session is an introduction to processes and protocols for addressing the traumatic impact on clients, staff and responders in the aftermath of a critical incident. Goals of the session include diagramming a traumatic event; prioritizing a traumatic response; addressing the aftermath; and affirming self-care.

Free Webinar for New Forum Members

The Forum invites its new members to participate in A Member’s Orientation to the Forum: Programs, Projects, Services and Benefits” scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2014 at 12 p.m. (EDT). Facilitated by Forum staff, this free webinar will describe the benefits of membership and introduce ways to get involved in the Forum’s work. We welcome new members and new colleagues to participate, as well as anyone else from a Forum member institution interested in refreshing their knowledge of what the Forum has to offer.

Standard 8 Workshop: Crafting Emergency Action Plans and Protocols

Wake Forest University will host a full-day Forum workshop, Focus on Standard 8: Crafting Emergency Action Plans and Protocols, on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. The goal of this workshop is to assist participants in developing custom plans and protocols in accordance with Standard 8 of the Forum's Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad. The workshop includes interactive exercises, much discussion and an opportunity to create and critique different aspects of emergency action protocols. Participants will discuss different aspects of handling common health and safety concerns, and understand how the Standards of Good Practice support their own program management and goals.

Undergraduate Research Award Presentations

The 2013 Undergraduate Research Award winners, Madison Stevens of Franklin College Switzerland/ SIT Study Abroad and Narintohn Luangrath of Boston College, presented their research at the Forum’s Tenth Annual Conference earlier this month. Video footage of their presentations is now available on the Forum’s YouTube channel!
