Forum Participates in White House Summit


Forum President and CEO Brian Whalen attended The White House Travel Blogger Summit on Study Abroad & Global Citizenship on Tuesday. The meeting brought together 100 travel writers and bloggers, as well as media, government and education leaders to discuss ways to encourage more students to participate in education abroad programs. “This was the first meeting of its kind, and I believe that it opened doors for new collaborations between the different groups represented,” said Whalen. He added, “The President and First Lady have been extremely supportive of education abroad. By hosting this meeting The White House has helped to expand the way that we think about education abroad and how we can reach our students.”
 
Whalen’s tweets from the Summit provided reports on the event. Speakers included White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, and Evan Ryan, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

Forum Convenes Meeting at The New York Times Headquarters


Last week participants in The Forum-New York Times in Education Digital Resource Center pilot program traveled to New York City to meet with colleagues from The New York Times. Representatives from the seven institutions participating in the pilot program learned how to most effectively navigate The New York Times and its archives, and shared preliminary ideas for using The New York Times resources in the education abroad context. The group also met with International Managing Editor Michael Slackman, and enjoyed a tour of the newsroom.

Jane Flaherty, who represented Texas A&M University at the meeting, said, “Texas A&M is very pleased to participate in The New York Times and Forum on Education Abroad collaboration to develop the Digital Resource Center. Texas A&M faculty across many different colleges will use this resource to enhance their study abroad programs.”
 
Over the course of the spring semester, pilot program participants will share examples of how they are using The New York Times in their education abroad programs, contributing to the creation of the Digital Resource Center, which will be accessible to Forum members through the Curriculum Cooperative.

Speaking the Same Language: Advocacy in Education Abroad


The Forum on Education Abroad is pleased to offer a Fireside Dialogue to be held in conjunction with the 11th Annual Forum Conference in New Orleans in March, 2015. Speaking the Same Language: Advocacy in Education Abroad is intended for senior professionals in education abroad seeking to develop strategies to advance the profile of education abroad within their institution or organization.

Participation for the Fireside Dialogue will be limited to 30 participants in order to foster in-depth discussion. The deadline to submit an application to participate is December 19. Applications to participate in the Fireside Dialogue will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Nominate a Colleague for the Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award


Now is the time to nominate a deserving colleague for The Forum’s Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award, which honors a Forum member who has been remarkably effective in influencing institutions of higher learning to understand and support education abroad through the dissemination of The Forum's goals: standards of good practice, data collection and research, curricular development and academic design, and assessment. The award will be presented at the 11th Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA, on Friday, March 27.
 
Forum members may submit nominations for the award to conference@forumea.org by January 16, 2015.

Workshop on Student Learning, Development and Academic Framework


The Forum will deliver a Standards workshop on Friday, February 27, 2015, at The Ohio State University.

This workshop will focus on Student Learning, Development and Academic Framework (Standards 2 & 3) and will help participants to identify the resources and design programming to assist in their efforts. Through simulations involving specific examples, participants will address critical issues often introduced by colleagues in higher education who are unfamiliar with the importance of tying these two areas together in education abroad. The workshop also counts as a Professional Certification workshop.
