Award for Excellence in Education Abroad Curriculum Design


The Forum on Education Abroad is pleased to announce the 2015 recipient of the Award for Excellence in Education Abroad Curriculum Design: Maja Sbahi Biehl of DIS Study Abroad in Scandinavia for her course “Children in a Multicultural Context: Theory and Practice.”
 
The Forum’s Award for Excellence in Curriculum Design honors faculty who develop and implement innovative and effective education abroad curricula. It is the education abroad field’s only award presented to an individual or group of individuals for excellence in the design of an education abroad course.
 
The award will be presented at The Forum’s 12th Annual Conference, Navigating the Intersections: The Cultures of Education Abroad, in Atlanta on April 8, 2016, where Biehl will present at a session about the course.

Call for Proposals: Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management


The Forum on Education Abroad announces a call for session proposals for the 7th Annual Standards of Good Practice Institute, Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management, to be held at Northwestern University on June 23, 2016. 
 
Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management is education abroad’s signature annual event focusing on the education abroad risk management issues faced daily by organizations and institutions. Education abroad professionals gather each year at this Standards Institute to debrief, train, improve and learn the latest in best practices of education abroad risk management, including regulatory compliance.

The deadline for submitting proposals is January 15, 2016.

Give your education abroad students, faculty, and staff 6 months of free access to the NYTimes.com and contribute to a new and innovative resource for education abroad. The Education Abroad Digital Resource Center will utilize New York Times news, content, and archives that span 164 years to enhance education abroad learning, before, during and after the education abroad experience.

Forum Makes Available Special Funding for QUIP


The Forum is pleased to announce a specially-funded opportunity for member institutions to participate in a Quality Improvement Program (QUIP) review. Selected institutions must commit to complete the QUIP reviews during the 2016 calendar year, and they will pay only a $500 fee and assume no other costs for the reviews, which include peer review site visits.
 
The deadline to apply is January 15, 2016.

FU-BEST Earns QUIP Interim Report Recognition



The Forum is pleased to announce that FU-BEST’s QUIP Interim Report has been approved by The Forum Review Panel. The Forum recognizes FU-BEST for continuing to be in substantial conformity with the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad, and for demonstrating a continued commitment to quality improvement.

Lessons Learned from a Higher Education Partnership


Dickinson College Provost Neil Weissman and Forum President and CEO Brian Whalen have co-authored an article that appears in this month’s University Business. The article, “Lessons Learned from a Higher Education Partnership,” describes the lessons learned from the nearly 10-year relationship between The Forum and Dickinson.

In Memoriam: Les Goodchild


The Forum has received the very sad news that Les Goodchild, who was the keynote speaker at the "Ethics and Integrity in Education Abroad" Standards Institute that was held in Chicago in 2013, has passed away. Les was a noted expert on the history of higher education, public policy, administration, professional ethics, as well as international and comparative education.

Deadline Approaches: Ron Koehn Conference Grant Award


The Ron Koehn Conference Grant Award is given to faculty members or education abroad colleagues who have been especially effective in contributing to innovations in education abroad program design. The award is named in honor of long-time education abroad innovator, Ron Koehn, who has played a significant role in advancing the education abroad field. The award winner will receive a stipend that helps to underwrite the costs of attending The Forum’s 12th Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA, April 6-8, 2016. The deadline to apply is December 11.
 

Fireside Dialogue: Inclusive Excellence in Education Abroad


The Forum is pleased to offer a Fireside Dialogue to be held in conjunction with its 12th Annual Conference in Atlanta in April 2016. Inclusive Excellence in Education Abroad is intended for education abroad professionals seeking to assist the field to meet its diversity goals by focusing on the more encompassing concept of Inclusive Excellence. The Forum’s Fireside Dialogues foster in-depth, collegial discussion that leads to practical solutions that help to advance The Forum and the field as a whole.

The application deadline is January 15, 2016.

Standards of Good Practice Workshops in Conjunction with WISE Conference


The Forum will host Standards of Good Practice Workshops in Winston-Salem, NC, on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. The workshops are being held in conjunction with the WISE Conference on intercultural skills development. In the morning, join Overview of the Standards of Good Practice and learn to assess and ensure quality in all areas of education abroad programming. The second workshop will be offered in the afternoon and will focus on Student Selection, Preparation, Code of Conduct & Returning Support (Standards 4 & 5).

European Colleagues: Register for Forum Workshops in Barcelona


On February 5, 2016, The Forum will host Standards Workshops at the CEA Study Abroad – Barcelona Center. The first workshop in the morning will focus on Student Learning, Development and Academic Framework (Standards 2 & 3) and will help you to identify the resources and design programming to assist in this effort. The afternoon workshop is on Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management (Standard 8), will provide the tools to assess and improve health and safety protocols. Standards of Good Practice Workshop at Arizona State University


The Forum will deliver the half-day workshop, Overview of the Standards of Good Practice, on February 8, 2016, on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. The Forum’s Standards provide a means to assess and ensure quality in all areas of education abroad programming - academic programming, student conduct, resources and personnel and policies and procedures. Using the Standards as a guide, participants will examine practices at their universities or organizations. This workshop will be highly interactive, drawing on case studies and issues of interest to participants.
