Forum Convenes the 7th Annual Standards Institute

Thursday morning, a record breaking number of colleagues gathered in Evanston, IL for Beyond the Basics of Health, Safety, Security and Risk Management, the field’s signature annual event focusing on education abroad risk management issues. Education abroad professionals gather each year at this Standards Institute to debrief, train, improve and learn the latest in best practices of education abroad risk management, including regulatory compliance.  The event was kicked off by a wonderful plenary address by Dr. Stephen Hargarten, Associate Dean in the Office of Global Health at the Medical School of Wisconsin. This year’s Institute is being hosted by Northwestern University and has attracted more than 120 participants.

Update on The Forum’s Strategic Planning

The Forum’s Strategic Planning Team is pleased to report that its work is well underway. The Strategic Planning Team formed research groups tasked with gathering data in the following areas:  “Mission, Vision, and Values,” “Stakeholders and Resources,” “The Environment,” and “Market, Products and Services, and Core Competencies.” In April and May, each research group reached out to education abroad professionals, seeking a range of perspectives on the topics. In late May, the Strategic Planning Team met in Denver and discussed these preliminary research findings.

In the next phase, the Strategic Planning Team will debrief The Forum Council and The Forum Board of Directors at a joint meeting in mid- July. The meeting will be an opportunity for in depth discussion.

Please watch the Forum News for announcements regarding webinars where you can learn more about the strategic planning process.

How does education abroad impact career decision-marking and vocation identity? Read Frontiers to find out.

In “The Impact of Study Abroad Experiences on Vocational Identity among College Students,” Kronholz and Osborn investigated the impact of the education abroad experience on vocational identity and career decision-marking variables among 106 undergraduate students. Using a mixed-methods approach and quantitative and qualitative measures, they found an increase in self-knowledge, a better understanding of the connection between self-knowledge and career options, and more position thoughts regarding their outlook on career options among students who have studied abroad. Learn about this and more in the latest volume of Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal Abroad.
