Forum Storytellers Episode 6: Remembering Joe Brockington

In August of 2015, the education abroad field lost one of its greatest advocates.

Joe Brockington, recipient of The Forum’s 2016 Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award, served the field of education abroad for over 20 years. In March of 2015, Joe was interviewed by Margaret Wiedenhoeft, his friend and colleague at Kalamazoo College. Joe and Margaret generously agreed to donate this video interview to The Forum. We are pleased to share it with you today as part of The Forum Storytellers project.

The Forum’s Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award was established to honor a Forum member who has been remarkably effective in influencing institutions of higher learning to understand and support education abroad through the dissemination of the Forum’s goals: standards of good practice, data collection and research, curricular development and academic design, and assessment. Brockington’s family accepted the award on his behalf on April 6 at the 12th Annual Forum Conference in Atlanta, GA.

Free Member Webinar: Minnesota Health & Safety Incident Legislation Update

Thursday, May 5, 11 a.m. (EDT)
Minnesota was the first state in the nation to pass a law requiring higher education institutions to report study abroad incidents. Other states and the federal government have considered following in Minnesota's footsteps. What are the implications of such laws? What lessons learned in Minnesota following the first year of reporting can be applied in other states/at the national level?  This webinar will provide insights on the implementation of the Minnesota law and the first year of data collected from Minnesota institutions. Updates from colleagues in states where similar legislation is being considered will also be shared.

While the webinar is open to Forum members only, the webinar recording will be available to the public.

Clery Workshop Rescheduled for August

The Forum’s workshop at the University of Dayton, U.S. Legislation Packs a Suitcase: The Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA and Related Obligations for Education Abroad, has been rescheduled for August 31.

Since the new Handbook for Campus Safety and Security Reporting was issued in 2011, VAWA was passed and the Title IX Dear Colleague Letter was sent, questions have arisen among education abroad professionals, risk managers, legal counsels and campus police chiefs. Many institutions and program sponsors still have questions as they grapple with the impact of these new laws or interpretations. Co-sponsored by the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), expert facilitators from both The Forum and NACUA will respond to these questions and specifically address implications for study abroad.
