Fifty Years After Apollo

Sunday, July 21st marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11’s moon landing. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin pioneered a new age of space exploration and discovery, and Aldrin was quoted to have said, “Looking back, landing on the moon wasn’t just our job, it was a historic opportunity to prove to the world America’s can-do spirit.” According to NASA, the Artemis missions are part of an effort to go back to the moon as preparation to send humans to Mars, so truly, the sky’s no longer the limit.

Dental Decay Detected

Sugar is a huge menace to children’s teeth. New studies in developing countries have found that as countries go through “nutrition transitions,” they are quick to garner more plant- and meat-based foods, less sugar and processed foods, while more developed countries rely on convenient, processed, sugary foods. Major players in the sugar industry are spending billions of dollars in marketing to push for the sale of their products, but at the cost of our teeth! Without proper dental hygiene and knowledge, many areas will suffer consequences of the sugar-high lifestyle, so make sure to brush your teeth!

To the Moon!

On NASA’s 50th birthday, the agency announced plans to send a manned capsule to the moon for the first time in decades. The Orion missions will begin by sending an unmanned crew capsule to lunar orbit, and then returning it back to Earth. After more missions testing different functions of the crew capsule, a manned mission to the moon is planned for 2024. We’re coming back, moon!

Avengers > Avatar

“Avengers: Endgame” is now the highest-grossing movie of all time, finally passing James Cameron’s “Avatar”, which had held the record for a whole decade. On Sunday, a statement from Disney announced that “Endgame” had grossed $2.79 billion, scraping by “Avatar’s” $2.7897 billion. James Cameron is still the king of box-office earnings, however, with two of his movies in “Avatar” and “Titanic” occupying the number two and three spots in gross box-office earnings.

Pac-Man’s Back

Manny Pacquiao defeated the previously undefeated Keith Thurman to become the oldest Welterweight Champion in history. Two judges scored the bout 115-112 for Pacquiao, while Glenn Feldman scored it 114-113 for Thurman to give Pacquiao a split-decision victory. A possible return to form twenty-five years after his debut at just sixteen, or just a fluke? Thurman has called for a rematch, so maybe we’ll see if it was just luck or if the Pac-Man still has some years left in him.

Subtitle Season

Do you watch Netflix with subtitles on? You might be onto something there. Nowadays, many people use subtitles while watching their favorite movies or TV shows, even if they’re not hearing-impaired. Some say that using subtitles helps them focus on their media when there are distractions around. Use of subtitles by non-hearing impaired also helps those with hearing impairment by increasing demand for subtitles on streaming services. Studies also show that using subtitles while showing kids TV shows can increase literacy.

You’re Breathtaking

Keanu Reeves has once again proved he’s the king of the Internet, after another post featuring the Matrix star surfaced. While filming scenes for “Bill and Ted: Face the Music,” Keanu Reeves passed by a sign made by a family that quoted his highly memed E3 conference statement, “You’re Breathtaking.” After seeing the sign, he got out of his vehicle and asked the sign-makers if he could autograph it and took a picture with the family. The summer of 2019 is the season of Reeves and his resurgence, with “John Wick Chapter 3,” "Always Be My Maybe," and a voice acting role in “Toy Story 4.”
