Headed to (Trade) War?

Are we headed to war with China? On Monday, China let its currency, the yuan, drop in value past 7 yuan to the dollar. The surrency has not reached this point in a decade, as a lower-valued currency can lead to inflation and other economic problems. Lowering the currency can be seen as a first step towards a trade war with the US, as it makes Chinese exports more competitive in the international markets. The US has also insisted on a stabilized currency in trade talks with China. Will the US look to engage in the currency war, devaluing the dollar in response?

Scooting to Save the World?

Have you tried those electric scooters that seem to be everywhere these days? Turns out, they might not be as good for the environment as the scooter companies would have you believe. While the scooters themselves are zero-emission, the materials used in their construction and efforts to maintain the scooters made them less environmentally-friendly than riding a bus or moped. The creation and disposal of the batteries, wheels and frames of the scooters are the main contributors to the environmental impact of using the scooters, which are constantly being vandalized and replaced.

Guess Who's Back, Back Again

For the first time in two years, Kevin Spacey has given a public performance: a poem reading in Rome. Since facing sexual accusations in 2017, the actor had all but disappeared from the public eye until today. Spacey recited the “The Boxer”, which included lines like “I shook the country, made the arenas vibrate, tore my opponents to shreds. I lit up the darkness, collected insults, compelled applause. Not everyone knew how to do this.” before a crowd at a Roman Museum. The performance came around three weeks after a US lawsuit on indecent assault and battery was dropped against the actor, but he still faces allegations of sexual assault in the UK.
