Early Stocking & Hatches

NDOW stocking early and some bugs coming off earlier than usual

Nevada Department of Wildlife is hitting the waters consistently for the past 2 weeks with rainbows, due to the thought that there might not be low enough temperatures on the water come 'normal' stocking time.   The Truckee, East Carson, Hinkson Slough, Topaz Lake, Spooner Lake, Desert Creek, Wilson's Common, Mitch Pond and the West Walker (Wilson's Canyon), all received fish in these past 2 weeks.  You know what this means?  It means you should get your gear ready and get out there!

We had reports in the last 10 days or so of the Golden stones coming off on the Truckee and the East Carson.  Some are the normal 1-1/2" Golden Stone and some are even the larger Skwala.  Caddis are even making a small show on the California section of the West Walker Catch & Release area through the canyon on 395, on the warmer days.  The small size 18 - 20 Trico's were happily out during the 60+ degree days.  So, we've got hatches going off, fish in the water and now is a good time to take advantage of it.

There's a TIME CHANGE coming up on March 8th.  Giving you more time to hit the waters after work and school (for those of you that are not retired and have to remember what day it is in your schedule :)  ).

PYRAMID Lake is hit and miss right now.  Most years, there is a lull just before Spawn, so it's not like we didn't expect it.  We've had reports of a 23+ pounder weighed in at Crosby's  this past weekend.  Spawn should be taking place in just a few weeks, which will make it easier on those that don't fish it due to the chuck and duck Ladder fishing.  Most fly fishers will turn to midging on a dry line then.  We've got some exciting patterns for midging along with our standards that we've been tying for years, like the Boobie, the Purple Haze and the holographic snowcones, along with balanced leaches and Jan Nemec' patterns for Pyramid.

Stop by the shop for directions to the waters and some productive fishing techniques during this time.  As always, we're here and happy to help!

Angler's Edge
Nevada Guide ~
John Fochetti

John recently moved to the Reno area from Fall River Mills, California, to be with his 'significant other', who is busily attending UNR.  During Summer months, John is Head Guide at Clearwater Lodge on the Pit River and surrounding waters and he will return there this Summer, but his love for the Eastern Sierra and guiding has brought him to "The Edge", and we and our guide staff welcome him!

On days off, during his stints at Clearwater Lodge, John would hit the waters of the Truckee and Pyramid Lake.   John, a guy who was born to guide, missing the days on the water with great clients, great fish and a satisfaction that guides get from being with our clients, made the big step into Nevada, by obtaining his Pyramid Lake Guide Permit along with being a sub-guide for The Angler's Edge.

If you've ever been to Clearwater Lodge on the Pit, and have run into John, now you can have the same great days with him on Pyramid Lake and the Truckee.  John will be doing more waters, we'll be posting these on our upcoming Newsletters.
