Napa Valley Band Reserve
NVYS Musicians and families are cordially invited to the 2022 Napa Valley Band Reserve (NVBR) Parade and Competition on Saturday, November 12, 2022 in American Canyon and Napa.

The NVBR Parade starts at 9:00 AM at Canyon Oaks Elementary in American Canyon and concludes with an awards ceremony at American Canyon High School. The Field Competitions start at 2:00 PM at Memorial Stadium in Napa followed by an awards ceremony at the stadium.

The Parade is free to all and the Field Competition is free for NVUSD students. A nominal spectator fee for the general public will be charged at Memorial Stadium.

More Information about Napa Valley Band Reserve (NVBR)
Approximately 25 High School Bands are scheduled to participate in the Parade and Field Competition! The NVBR started at Vintage HS where current American Canyon High School (ACHS) Music Director/Instructor, Brendan Day was a VHS band member (now alum). Brendan has grown the instrumental music program at ACHS and reenergized the 27+ years of the NVBR marching band competition!

The NVBR is one of the top NCBA participating band reviews in Northern California!

Volunteers are still needed for this event. Please see event website for details on how you can support this longstanding tradition in the Valley.

Search for a new NVYS Executive Director starts now!
NVYS is on the precipice of launching a new beginning orchestra program and mid-project for adopting a 5-year strategic plan rooted in EDI. This is a
great opportunity for someone who has a passion for the arts, youth, EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) and non-profit management!

Additionally, we have two other opportunities! We are partnering with Boys and Girls Club and the NOTES Foundation to pilot a beginning strings program. We are in search of one coach to teach violin or cello, and another violin or cello coach to teach and serve as Project Lead.

You can find all job descriptions HERE.

Please share the job descriptions with your networks far and wide!

A  Note About Rehearsal End Times

We wanted to share some important information about our rehearsal end times and pick-ups.

REHEARSAL END TIMES
Sinfonia: 6:00 PM
Bridge: 6:45 PM
Youth Symphony: 6:45 PM

The fluctuation in end times between 7pm and 6:45pm for Youth Symphony have been due to finding the optimal time for ending rehearsals and cleaning up before campus security clears the building for the evening. Rehearsals will end at 6:45pm and we will continue to ask musicians to help us clean up stands, chairs and instruments. Some musicians are quicker than others and will take 5 minutes, while some have more instrumentation to store and will take longer. We have really appreciated the musician's help in getting the rooms picked up. THANK YOU!

SAFETY WHILE WAITING FOR PICK-UP
Musicians have been allowed to leave the rehearsal rooms and areas as soon as they are done. Some parents have arranged to wait for their children at the entrance of the building, while others have waited curbside. We want each family to make the arrangement that is best for them.

This said, all musicians are able to wait inside the lobby/entrance area until their parent/guardian picks them up or arrives on campus if it feels more secure than curbside. I (Silvia) am the last out of the building after clearing all of the rehearsal areas. I will wait curbside with any musician that is still in the lobby or curbside when I exit at 7pm. Please rest assured that I will never leave the campus while a musician is still waiting for their parent/guardian. In addition, campus security is typically stationed near the building until 7:30pm.

This said, we appreciate parents/guardians arriving by 7pm to ensure their musician does not worry about being the last one. Should an emergency arise, please contact me as soon as possible at (707) 320-7225 so that I can assure your musician that you are on the way.

NVYS is a family. I encourage all our musicians and parents to look out for one another during rehearsals, breaks and at pick-up. Let's make sure to talk and include anyone that is alone. If you are waiting curbside look out for one another - if you see something fishy LET ME KNOW RIGHT AWAY. I want you to ALWAYS feel safe in talking to me about anything that comes up. You may see me running around but I can always take a moment to talk.

Can't wait to see you at rehearsal this afternoon!
~Silvia

Notes from our last EDI Meeting

Thanks for making our meeting productive. Here is what we accomplished:
- Reviewed the EDI survey results - One take-away is that NVYS families do not see NVYS as a community, but a place to play/learn music
- Identified a need for Latinx representation on the committee and will actively recruit Latinx parents and students
- Discussed what community means to each of us (understanding that is unique to each of us)
and how do we build a community and more welcoming orchestra at NVYS?
- Decided to create a social event that would continue to build community like Camp Caz and Tour

Next Meeting
Our next meeting is rescheduled for Nov 27.
