Also, a special thank you to all of the parents and volunteers that kept things moving throughout the afternoon.

2022 Music in the Vineyards Solo Competition for Piano & Strings

Music Department Colleagues, Teachers, Students and Parents,

We humbly request that you share the word of our ninth annual Solo Competition for Piano & Strings open to musicians from age 13-18. This year, we have once again decided to go virtual via video submission for the competition and we have waived the $10 application fee for all applicants!

Music in the Vineyards created the competition nine years ago to give young performers the opportunity to perform at our festival, meet and receive feedback on their playing from professional musicians and compete for a cash prize!

The application deadline is Monday, March 28, 2022. Students are requested record two separate pieces, preferably by contrasting composers, each 2-5 minutes in length. Video submissions will be due no later than Friday, May 27, 2022.

Full details are on the application and on our website.  Students can also apply on our website at:
www.musicinthevineyards.org/scholarships/apply

Thank you for bringing this to the attention of talented, young instrumentalists!

Your Tour FAQ’s

Q. Where do I send my insurance form and payment?
A. All tour participants must complete an insurance form (opting in or out). Insurance forms and payment are due by April 1 to MCI. All NVYS Scholarship recipients are required to purchase premiere insurance which includes cancel for any reason.

Q. My friends and family will not be "on tour" but would like to see our performance. Can they attend the concert?
A. Yes! We want to invite everyone to come to our concerts. Tickets are 25 euros and will be available soon. If you are "on tour" concert tickets are included in the cost of tour.

Q: It looks like a booster is required for anyone who had the vaccine more than 9 months prior. What about kids under 15 who cannot get the booster yet?
A: Yes, the kids who cannot get a booster yet can still go on the trip. They will just need a negative PCR test prior to departure. Before entering Austria, they will need a PCR test which the tour company will help arrange. The rules around vaccines are everchanging but we will keep you updated!

Q: How are food allergies and dietary restrictions handled on tour?
A: We have successfully accommodated all allergies and dietary restrictions. Once the group is registered we will be sending you a spreadsheet further down the road which will ask for any dietary restrictions of tour participants.

Q: What airline does the tour company use?
A: Most likely Lufthansa, United, or British Airways.

Absences

You NOW Need a Gate Code!

Due to concerns about theft, when you come to rehearsals you will now need to use Gate Code 2205.

Please write this down as you will need it througout the year.

Mask Mandate Modified and COVID Testing Prior to Rehearsal

We are aware that the State has lifted the indoor mask mandate and public schools have not. For the time being, NVYS will keep our mask mandate in place and will revisit this policy after our March 13 concert.

Thank you to everyone for testing prior to rehearsal and staying home if you had symptoms or tested positive. If you tested positive last week, we are asking you to provide a negative test result within 72 hours of our next rehearsal prior to attending.

With limited supplies of home tests, we recognize we cannot make testing mandatory, but we HIGHLY encourage all students to test prior to rehearsal. Most schools continue to provide weekly testing. Home antigen kits are also invaluable (if you can find them for purchase). You can also find Napa County PCR tests here. Please be safe – and keep all fellow NVYS musicians and staff safe - by getting tested. Lastly, a reminder to stay home if you have any symptoms!

Thank you so much for your commitment to NVYS and for understanding the measures taken during this surge. NVYS will continue to commit to the safety of our students and community, while doing our best to remain in-person.

Join our Equity, Diversity and
Inclusion Committee

NVYS has been selected to receive a 3-year $90,000 League of American Orchestra's Catalyst Incubator Grant ($30,000 per year) which will support important work in making NVYS a more Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive organization.

Great! How can I help?

We started an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee last year via zoom and would like to reboot that committee in a more meaningful way. NVYS Parent and Board Member, Dr. Kim Hester Williams, has kindly offered to be our Board Liaison. We have a few members but would like to build the committee to a diverse group of 10-12 members who represent a diversity of roles in the organization (musicians, staff, board and parents), race/ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ,  years with the organization and ability (physical, neurodivergence, mental health). We specifically want representation from Asian, White and Latinx voices. We welcome everyone and anyone to this work - whether you are just curious or passionate, we would like you to add your perspective. For students, this is an opportunity to add this meaningful and guided work to your resume and college application.

What would the committee be doing?
The committee will help provide insight and input while we work with professional EDI consultant, Salvador Acevedo. Some activities the EDI Committee might do is:

- Defining a welcoming orchestra (what does NVYS do well/where can we improve)
- Providing input into NVYS program through an EDI lens (auditions, recruitment, tours, repertoire)
- Creating a Welcome Committee and musician mentor programs
- Participating in anti-bias workshops and identifying workshops for the greater organization

What is the commitment?
The committee would meet every other month, meeting in-person before NVYS rehearsals and an occasional evening via Zoom. Email Shelley at ssurh@nvyso.org if you are interested.
