Thanksgiving Day is almost upon us—families and friends across the country will gather to feast, relax and reminisce. It is the perfect time of year to share all of the things for which Luminari is grateful.

It’s all about the food
With the introduction of our newest program, Camp Delicious! coming summer 2014, it seemed only appropriate to indulge in the delectable and the delicious. Food has the universal ability to bring people together, create lasting memories and provide traditions for future generations. At Luminari, we believe inspiration and creativity begin at the dining room table – so in the spirit of the season, we raise our collective forks in tribute to family and gratitude. For some great tips on nutrition and food prep, follow our own celebrity foodie, Leslie Bonci on twitter (https://twitter.com/lesliebonci).

#InspireMe - our inspiration is Team Luminari Collaborators …And more fun
For some, Thanksgiving Day is all about football, parades and the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Luminari would like to establish a new tradition, and we need your help. We are looking for photos of inspiration (it can be a multi-generation family photo, or a picture of a single leaf left on your favorite tree – just remember we are looking for whatever inspires you). Between now and December 31, upload your photo to our facebook page and please include the (hashtag) #InspireMe along with your name, city and a short caption or description of your inspiration. We will publish an album of all inspirational photos in our January issue of LUMOS! So grab your camera phone and get snapping.

Finally, thank you for your continued interest and support for Luminari. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our friends and volunteers, partners and directors, sponsors and donors for making 2013 an outstanding year for our organization.

Gratefully,
Hilda Pang Fu, President, Luminari

A Day for Educators

On October 27, an intimate group of dedicated educators and administrators joined Luminari for brunch at Girasole in Shadyside to learn more about our organization and how to get their students involved in our programs. Some of the schools in attendance included the Ellis School, Pittsburgh Public Schools, Chartiers Valley, Shadyside Academy, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, West Jefferson Hills, and Mt. Lebanon.

A Day for Educators with Luminari

Gina Catanzarite, director (Teen Writer!); Kyle Smith, director (I Want to be an Ambassador!), along with former directors Gina Oliphant, Rick Tony and Nathan Browne; Kelsey Weisgerber, associate director (Camp Delicious!); and event organizer Jill Campbell, Luminari Coordinator, spoke openly about the impact each camp has had on former students, the process of creating unique, fun and educational experiences for teens, and answered questions. Many educators were pleasantly surprised to learn of the multi-faceted experiences within each camp.

2014 Luminari Award

We are excited to announce the launch of our third annual Luminari Award, which is open to all school districts in Allegheny County. The goals of the award are to recognize the winning students and to honor the dedicated educators who help them to succeed. The winning student will receive an all-expense paid, merit-based scholarship to attend the I Want to be an Ambassador! camp in 2014.

New to the award this year is the addition of a $500 educational grant for the winning schools! This grant is to be used toward Diplomacy related activities during the year. If you are interested in participating, please call us at 412.877.1888 or Email us for more information!
Calling all student writers
A new writing competition for young people that touches on similar themes of our Teen Writer! and Ambassador camps is now accepting submissions. We’re looking at you former and future Teen Writers and Ambassadors!  For information, click here, and Good Luck!
