Luminari Announces New Ambassador Camp Director

Nathan Browne, Director, I Want to be an Ambassador!

We are excited to announce that Nathan Browne has joined our leadership team as the new Director of the I Want to be an Ambassador! camp. Nathan teaches at Chartiers Valley Middle School where he developed and implemented a unique curriculum for sixth-grade World Cultures. "I have been teaching World Cultures for four years at Chartiers Valley, where I have been fortunate enough to be an active participant in several district initiatives focusing on diversity. My background and experiences have afforded me unique opportunities, but none as exciting as the opportunity to serve as Camp Director for the I Want to be an Ambassador! camp," Nathan said.
Nathan's background and passion are in historic preservation, archeology and global studies and cultures. Highly regarded by his colleagues, he likes to initiate and organize extra-curricular learning opportunities for his students, participates in school's instructional and strategic committees, and leads the Diversity Initiative.
Nathan was Archeology Instructor at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth, and Educator in the Indigenous Exchange Series working alongside aboriginal Australians in Northern Territory, Australia. He added, "I enjoy international travel, cooking (and eating!) new types of food, reading, home remodeling, playing and listening to music, camping and learning. I currently reside in Bethel Park with my wife of over two years, Alessandra."

A note from our President

by Hilda Pang Fu, President, Luminari
When you think back to your childhood memories of the holiday season, what was it like? Do your senses awaken to the sights, sounds and scents of a simpler time? The meaningful memories of family and friends gathering to warmly greet each other and share stories of the past year flood your conscience in a way that can rarely be expressed in mere words. Moments and experiences involving shared meals, gifts, decorations and faith are among the fondest thoughts and feelings we can recall. Most of us can immediately remember the scent of holiday candles and freshly baked goodies.
As we grow older, we begin to craft our new memories with our children and ever extending families. The one thing that does not alter is our capacity to care about those who matter most. Memories do indeed last a lifetime. From the Luminari family to yours, may this special time of year bring you comfort, joy and lasting memories.

We have more exciting news to share! UPMC has made a pledge to support Luminari and its 2013 programs. UPMC has long been a leader in philanthropy and building meaningful relationships that reinforce its commitment to the vitality of the Pittsburgh region. Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer at UPMC Candi Castleberry Singleton said, “UPMC is proud to support Luminari and the I Want to be an Ambassador! summer camp. We continue to be inspired by all of the students and the diversity of their personal stories as they learn how to resolve conflicts, negotiate, and in the process discover the myriad ways in which they can make a difference in their families, schools, communities, and—yes—the world. Keep up the great work!”
With support from UPMC, students who participate in I Want to be an Ambassador! will be fully immersed for seven days in the art of diplomacy through role playing, creative dramatics, round-table discussions, presentations and a field trip to  Washington D.C. where they will meet with diplomats on Embassy Row and see first-hand the skills they have learned about brought to life.
