SNTI Sneak Peek
Family-Professional Collaboration at the Heart of Effective START Services
Join Dr. Diane Jacobstein (Clinical Psychologist/Senior Policy Associate, National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health, Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development/UCED), Karla Chestnut (Parent of an individual receiving Iowa START services), and Felicia Bates (Iowa START) for their breakout session entitled, “Family-Professional Collaboration at the Heart of Effective START Services” on Monday, May 7th.

We recently caught up with the presenters during one of their planning meetings and asked them what they were most excited about sharing during their breakout session.
"I am presenting because I believe in START and what it has done for our son, Nick. Our situation was dire- we were out of options- START came in and saved the day. Prader-Willi does not go away, but everything else can be changed. Nick does as well as we do."

-Karla Chestnut
Parent of individual
receiving Iowa START Services
Nick Chestnut
"Karla has been such a great advocate for Nick and his system of support- what she has done for the system using her knowledge and advocacy has lead her to pursue what is best for her son. She didn’t let go the entire time, and she was willing to get there."
- Felicia Bates
Iowa START Coordinator/Clinical Team Leader
"I am looking forward to sharing how the START process worked so effectively in the face of some pretty serious roadblocks, and how creativity and innovation were used in this process. This was not about some inherent flaw in Nick that made him have behavior issues, it was about the system not working that affected him grievously. When people began to understand Nick, things changed."
