START Welcomes Newest Program: Long Island, New York
Last week, the NY START Long Island team and Center for START Services Project Facilitators (Dr. Jill Hinton, Dr. Joan Beasley, and Robert Scholz) met together in Old Bethpage, NY for a two-day introductory forum to get to know each-other, review the newly developed START Leadership Handbook on program development, and review the team's initial action plan.

On the second day of the visit, each Long Island team member was asked how the START model related to their personal goals as a team member and how START concepts and approaches resonated with their personal and professional values. Below is the result of this discussion:

  • LI/NY START values cohesive bonds and being part of a national network, making a contribution, joining with others, modeling, research and data analysis.  Making the community a better place, through outreach, action focused, supportive, collaborative endeavors. As lifelong learners we welcome multiple perspectives, innovation and the ability to make a contribution.

  • LI/NYSTART will work to overcome the concept of "thinking outside the box" as the goal is to expand and become the box, the way in which we support people with IDD and mental health needs. While we are learning what to do, we will also focus on the "how" and the "why" in order to be successful.
  • LI/NYSTART values treating people with humanity. They are our family members. We are community organizers, working in partnership, while bringing oxygen to systems in need, with humor and joy in the work. In doing our work we value the opportunity to learn and grow, being paid to think and develop a community of practice.

  • LI/NYSTART coordinators are motivated storytellers who value positive engagement, humility, being informed, teamwork and our collective intelligence. We will do our homework, demonstrate our leadership, and stay informed.

(Summary presented by Dr. Beasley)
