The Center for START Services
March is National Social Work Month
The START model is built on social work values and principles of social justice, identification of strengths and solutions and understanding people in the context of their environment. As a program within UNH’s Institute on Disability/University Center for Excellence in Disability (UCED), the Center for START Services contributes to the advancement of policies and practices that improve outcomes for people with disabilities and co-occurring behavioral health needs, their families, and their communities.
In addition, START shares NASW’s value of the importance of research and evidence-based approaches “as a means of improving the well-being of individuals, families, and society; strengthening the current workforce; and maintaining the social work profession’s role in health care settings” (NASW Cultural Standards for Social Work Practice in Health Care Settings, 2016)

The social work profession has contributed to the field of IDD and co-occurring conditions through the promotion of culturally competent family-centered practices, community inclusion, and innovative wellness-based treatment approaches. As March is national Social Work Month, we would like to recognize the many START team members who are social workers and bring their unique training, perspectives and contributions to the START network.

A focus on provider wellness, positivity and contentment is also important in order to maintain effectiveness. We are sharing an article from a national social work bulletin that outlines three simple steps that focus on these things in order to prevent burnout and fatigue.
