Updates to START Coordinator Curriculum

The Center for START Services is committed to providing the START Network with the most current and relevant training material. Trainings are evaluated on an ongoing basis using the following criteria:

  • Training is 2 or more years old (reviewed for relevance)
  • Training received less than 85% satisfaction rate from attendees (reviewed for quality)
  • Any research, best practice, or approach is found to be no longer current due to new research findings (updated)
  • If new, pertinent information or topics are missing upon review (updated/added)

As of February 6, 2018, the following trainings have been ADDED to the curriculum:

  • DM-ID 2 Overview (Charlot, 35 minutes) in Training Topic 3: Introduction to Mental Health and IDD
  • Emergency Crisis Response for Individuals with IDD and Behavioral Health Needs (O’Neal, 60 minutes) in Training Topic 11: START Emergency Services
  • Genetic Syndromes Associated with IDD (Charlot, 66 minutes) in Training Topic 6: Health and Wellness

As of February 6, 2018, the following training has been REMOVED from the curriculum

  • Therapeutic Recreation in Training Topic 13: START Center-Based & Mobile Supports

These changes are reflected in the Training Group Syllabus located within the
2018 START Coordinator Certification Guide.

Regarding Recently Added Trainings:
  • START leadership teams are expected to host forums during already scheduled group supervision, team meetings or summits where START teams can view recently added trainings, followed by a facilitated discussion.

  • Coordinators in current training groups will view added trainings during the course of their training group. Arrangements to complete these assignments will be discussed with their respective training group facilitator.

  • Certified Coordinators may count the recently added trainings toward ‘training hours received’ on their certification renewal application.
