Hope you enjoyed the eclipse,  <<First Name>>!

On Monday, we had the amazing opportunity to travel to Adairville, KY, just miles from the epicenter of eclipse activity in Hopkinsville, KY to view a 100% total eclipse of the Sun!

Steve used the Google overlay map to find a good spot on the totality band.  When we arrived at the Forest Grove Church Parking lot, we were not the first!  There were about 30 people tucked under the trees with all sorts so glasses, makeshift optical protection, pieces of plastic and cardboard with tiny holes punched through and even a welder’s mask.

The trees lining the river behind us created a perfect environment for a little breeze and a clear landscape of crescents as we approached the total eclipse.  The crowd was eclectic and diverse, which seems to be the norm for us!  One man was from a California and lived a life so removed from media that he did not even know there was an eclipse until he showed up in Indiana.  He served as the self-appointed head astronomer for the group.  At one point a woman pulled out a Bluegrass Jawharp and began to play.  Buzzards circled overhead as they eyed the small dogs hiding under the tress below. Someone found a white towel and laid it on the ground so we could see the crescents more clearly. We shared our email address with a woman that seemed to be in charge and they promised to send pictures.

As the moon moved over the sun; it looked like a a cookie being eaten, with each bite taking out a bigger chunk of the whole. The sky and atmosphere felt eerie. My stomach felt queasy and I was aware of an unfamiliar grayness in the sky.  The overhead parking lot light turned on and the rooster in the distance stopped crowing. The planets had aligned and the atmosphere was perfect.

The actual eclipse was brilliant; unlike anything I had ever seen with my own eyes in my life experience.  For 2 minutes and 38 seconds we stared at the sun and moon without protective glasses.  The brilliance of the sun shone like white rays of light in an ethereal circular pattern. We could see Venus on the right and Jupiter just to left.  I actual wondered if this was similar to what some people see before they die or have a near death experience.

As the moon continued to move, protective glasses were put back on and the crescents shapes were flipped.  The excitement of the event was complete.  All the travel and preparation was worth the astronomical light show that may have been a once in a lifetime event.

It is amazing to me that scientists can calculate and predict and event in the solar system with amazing accuracy.  I feel like I am stumbling around in the dark to pull together meaningful experiences for myself in this earthly life!

What are your dreams; the collection of priceless experiences that money can’t buy?  The beauty of nature, the sun, stars, phases of the moon and rhythm of the seasons that ground us and nurture our souls.  Friendship, love, art, music; the list goes on.

What is holding you back from realizing the simplest of dreams?

Was it worth the effort to drive 4 hours to see the total eclipse when we could have watched it on TV?  It took us 9 hours to drive back home!  Traffic was a nightmare, however, as a group of sentient beings, we had all experienced a beautiful sight.

For 2 minutes and 38 seconds, we bonded with strangers and our natural surroundings on a planet that rotates around the sun with a moon that rotates around our earth.  More often than we know, things line up in an extraordinary pattern!

Yes, it is one of the most valuable of all experiences – priceless!

Keep dreaming, my friends!

In the Spirit of Strengths,

Jennifer
