President's Message
Last month’s newsletter saw a recap of 2014 by myself and others, so it seems only appropriate to look ahead to what’s in store for 2015. Of course it’s hard to look ahead without the great philosopher Yogi Berra’s quote regarding the future popping into mind: “It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.†With that in mind, let me look ahead…cautiously.
But first, let me mention a lady that I knew only too briefly. Joan Hesler was the first Executive Director of Ohio ACEP, and oh my, what a job she did. While I met her only briefly, the quality of her directorship is evidenced by two outstanding facts… [Read more]

Joan Hesler: 1936-2015
It is with great sadness that we report Joan Hesler, the very first Executive Director of Ohio ACEP, has passed away. Joan was a tireless supporter of emergency medicine, and at a time when the specialty was in its infancy, her dedication and leadership were crucial to the Chapter’s early development.
During her time as Executive Director, Joan led the Chapter from a small group of like-minded physicians to an influential medical society with hundreds of members around the state. Joan also developed Ohio ACEP’s Emergency Medicine Board Review Course, which is nationally-recognized for excellence in written board exam preparation.
Joan is remembered by Ohio ACEP’s early members and physician leadership as a mentor, friend, and pioneer. Her guidance has left an indelible mark on Ohio ACEP. Without her, the Chapter—and indeed emergency medicine in Ohio—would not be the same. She will be missed.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Susan Bundy; son, Randy Ray; grandchildren, Joe, Mark, Rex, and Sarah; and great-grandchildren, Chance, Jacob, Kyleigh, Sapphire, and Sophie. She was 78 years old.
Our thoughts are with Joan’s friends and family.
For more about Joan’s life, or to leave memories and condolences, see her obituary in The Columbus Dispatch.
