President's Message
Flags are at half-mast. Again.
Since Sunday morning when I first learned of the Orlando shootings I have been thinking about it. I've watched and read more news than usual this week. I keep thinking of the families and friends of the dead and of the survivors and how so many lives are forever changed. As I’m sure many of you have, I kept thinking of all those working that day in the streets, EDs, and ORs in Orlando. Their careers and lives have been affected forever. We pride ourselves on our ability to do our job no matter what, but I cannot comprehend working when one shooting became a few, then a dozen, then scores. Forty-nine dead. Twenty-five still hospitalized. [Read more]

ACEP President Calls For Improving Medical Responses To Mass Shootings
In an exclusive interview with Modern Healthcare on Monday, the American College of Emergency Physicians President Dr. Jay Kaplan “called for more data on injuries and improved emergency response measures to better treat victims of gun violence†when mass shootings occur. Dr. Kaplan said, “We need to better understand how to take care of these patients. The battlefield has been brought to our communities.†ACEP’s High Threat Emergency Casualty Task Force will work with researchers and public policy experts to improve responses to mass shootings with evidence-based guidelines.

Comments Sought for Draft Clinical Policy on Early Pregnancy
The draft “Clinical Policy: Critical Issues in the Initial Evaluation and Management of Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department in Early Pregnancy,†is in the review stage of ACEP clinical policy development and open for comments.
