No, this is NOT my prediction of this fall’s annual "The Game" but rather the final count of ACEP attendees from Michigan and Ohio at last week's Legislative Advocacy Conference in Washington, DC. As I wrote last month, our members always say that Advocacy is the most important aspect of their membership, yet our turnout was less than outstanding. The 19 physicians from Ohio who attended were superb participants! And although I feel that our Hill visits were successful in that we did secure several co-sponsors for ACEP's key legislative issues, I can only believe that had we had 5-6 physicians at each Representative's office visit instead of one or two we could have made more of an impact. Legislative Advocacy Conference & Leadership Summit

12,456 emergency physicians from around the country descended on Washington, DC last week for ACEP’s Legislative Advocacy Conference & Leadership Summit. The Ohio Chapter delegation met with legislators and key staffers on Capitol Hill, honed their advocacy skills, and got some great leadership training.

 Non-Partisan Group Offers Resources to Prevent Gun Violence Against Kids
Contributed by our colleagues at the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians
On April 29, 2015, the executive directors from the Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics, the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, and the Ohio Osteopathic Association met with Paula Fynboh, Mark Barden, and Ellie Hayes of Sandy Hook Promise to identify potential areas of possible collaboration. Sandy Hook Promise, a national, non-profit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut arose from the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Mr. Barden’s son, Daniel, was killed in his first grade classroom that terrible day. [Read more]

 Ohio Medicaid Provides ICD-10 Billing Resources
The Ohio Department of Medicaid has created a web resource for providers to assist them with the transition to the 10th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). On the webpage, Ohio Medicaid posts ICD-10 Transition Information for Providers & Staff (ICD-10 TIPS) to provide guidance for billing issues. Reminder: ICD-10 compliance date is October 1, 2015.

Defending the Emergency Room
In a May 8 letter to the editor of The New York Times, ACEP President, Dr. Michael Gerardi, responds to columnist Maureen Dowd, who recently penned a column which quoted disparaging comments about ED personnel. Dr. Gerardi corrects the record, saying EM physicians have the training and expertise to quickly assess and treat stroke and that columns like Dowd’s could discourage people from seeking emergency care when experiencing symptoms of stroke.
