Parent Workshop-Managing Academics for Traveling Athletes
Tuesday, January 10
5 pm - 6 pm
VSSA Think Tank
SSCV Academic Coach Merritt Harlan and SSCV Academic Director Sharon Schmidt have collaborated to develop two VSSA Traveling Athlete Workshops--
-Student Workshop-Monday, January 9th - VSSA gym during Advisory period
-Parent Workshop-Tuesday, January 10th - 5 pm to 6 pm - VSSA Think Tank
Use of these workshop materials and techniques by VSSA traveling athletes of all ages and travel levels (or some variation of these that best suits the student's organizational habits) will help them to get ahead before travel, minimize what they need to do on the road and enable them to catch up within a few days of return in order to become more self-sufficient in organizing academics alongside athletics.
Final Exams are Monday 12/19 and Tuesday 12/20

I attended the screening of Screenagers at Eat, Chat, Parent in October put on by ERYC and was impressed enough by it that we have decided to host a screening at ECCA on Thursday, January 12th at 6:30. The movie is about an hour long.
We are welcoming the public to attend this screening in case anyone missed the ECP. Due to the contract, we have to charge for it, but it's going to be a nominal fee of $2 and we won't turn anyone away without funds.

Grit Study; Student Perseverance and Parenting Practice. Message for parents:
Hello! I wanted to take a moment to tell you about a research study that I think is worthwhile to participate in. It is a study on parenting practices and student perseverance. Researchers at the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado Mesa University are interested in collecting data from parents and children on beliefs and actions related to academics, achieving goals, and self-esteem. Clicking on the link below will provide you with more information about the study and will allow you to begin filling out the survey (also see the attached flyer).
The link below will take you to two surveys: one for yourself and one for your child to complete. The surveys should take less than 20 minutes each to complete. If you choose, you will be entered into a drawing for one of three $50 gift cards in appreciation of your time.
Thank you for supporting educational research by participating in this study.
Click here for the link to the survey. Click here for the flyer.

Fees at VSSA
There is a required Eagle County School District fee of $550 for every ECS student. For VSSA students, this fee goes towards the following: transportation, books, the wilderness trip, social events/dances, classroom supplies, lab renewables, spring trips, and printing/copying. The breakdown of this fee varies depending on the grade of the student, however, this is a district-required fee. The fees are bundled and can be paid in full or a payment plan may be arranged with the Office Manager. We are proud to have held fees at $550 for the last nine years. You will be glad to know that VSSA has no other fees assessed throughout the year.
Excused absences include athletic competitions and training, college visits, illness and family emergencies. SSCV coaches are responsible for communicating with VSSA on all excused absences for competitions and training. Parents do not need to contact the school in regards to these absences.
Attendance reminder: When a student-athlete is absent due to something other than an SSCV Excused Absence, parents must notify the school by e-mailing the Office Manager, Gibby at firstname.lastname@example.org VSSA may request a doctor’s note for doctor's appointments or physical therapy appointments or if numerous days are missed due to illness.
