Eagle County Commissioner Debate Monday, October 6

VSSA will be hosting an open to the public town hall debate, Monday, October 6th during All School Meeting at 9:20am. We are looking forward to hosting the incumbents, Kathy Chandler-Henry, Courntney Holm, Dick Mayne and Jeanne McQueeney. Mr. Pomeroy's American Government class has planned a series of thoughtful and challenging questions on Education, the Environment and Jobs in Eagle County. Our Head of School, Geoff Grimmer, will be the moderator and we have planned on presenting from 9:20-10:35 in the gym. This has been an incredibly beneficial, real world experience for the 12th Grade and will also help to integrate VSSA into the larger community of Eagle County.

Being on Time To All School Meeting & Classes

VSSA prides it self on bringing in different speakers for the ASM (All School Meeting) for most Monday's throughout the year. We have found an unfortunate trend that students are often late on Monday's. Students who are late will not be let into the meeting so they do not interrupt our speakers and will work with a teacher on cleaning the school.

The office generates a list of unexcused tardies each week and Mr. Grimmer meets with students about these tardies including Monday's ASM (All School Meeting).
Please be aware that unexpected traffic or something like this is not considered an excused absence even if a parent "excuses" them. Doctor/PT/etc appointments will be excused if there are absolutely no other times an appointment can be made. Please try to schedule these outside the school day, or during non core classes such as study hall. VSSA suggests students be early to the start of the day to avoid any lateness. Thank you!

ECS Newly Recreated Website

Eagle County Schools has recreated their website and it looks great! The relationship between parents and a school district depends, like all relationships, on communication. Eagle County Schools’ new website which launched on Wednesday and was created to strengthen this with a new, intuitive layout and more accessible information. Click here to continue to read more about the site.

If you have trouble accessing the site, or are redirected to an error page, you must clear out your "cache". You can try a number of things. On a Mac, refresh the page and it should open for you. REMINDER!!!!!  This Sunday is the Biggest and Best College Fair in Colorado! We hope students and parents will attend the 10th annual Colorado Western Slope College Fair from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Aspen High School this Sunday!
STUDENT REGISTRATION IS ACTIVE!  PLEASE REGISTER BEFORE COMING TO THE FAIR!  All students are required to register before entering the Fair.  Register by visiting the Fair’s website, it takes only a minute or two.  Print and take a screen shot of their email confirmation and to bring it with you. They will still be offering registration at the Fair for those who are unable to register ahead of time.
There is also SOME GREAT INFORMATION TO HELP STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THE FAIR! Explore the Students & Families section of the website for information on how to prepare for the fair, how to dress for the fair and how to make the most of your time with Admissions Officers and more!
Students and parents should plan what workshops they want to attend and which schools they would like to meet in advance of the fair.  Attached is the list of workshops and attending colleges.

The Vail Valley Soccer Club is hosting our Vail Cup tournament this weekend and we are looking for some volunteers this Saturday and Sunday. If anyone would like further information, please email Heidi Telles for further details.

GT News: Parent Nominations

Dear Families,
Each fall Eagle County Schools opens a window to include parent nomination as an avenue to screen students for gifted ability. Parents can pick up a nomination packet at their child’s school. The nomination packet includes additional information about the identification process, a checklist, permission to test form, characteristics of gifted learners and a Kingore Observation Inventory (KOI) for parents. The 2014 fall nomination window is open now until Friday October 17, and nomination packets will be available in the front office just prior to the window. Please note that nomination packets will not be accepted before or after these dates. Please return completed nomination packets to your child’s classroom teacher, the gifted specialist or the front office at your child’s school.
The KOI is an opportunity for parents to highlight their child’s advanced behaviors. Typically, gifted children are two or more years above grade level, are good problem solvers, may prefer the company of adults, and need little or no practice to learn a new skill. Young gifted children may have taught themselves to read at an early age or mastered math skills intuitively.
In addition to the information gathered from the Parent KOI, the district will gather information from the classroom teacher(s), the student’s classroom performance and standardized testing of verbal, non-verbal and quantitative ability. The goal is to gather a sufficient body of evidence (BOE) to determine the appropriate educational placement for your child. This process may take up to 6-8 weeks. In December, a group of gifted specialists will review all information and recommend gifted placement or continuation of services in the regular classroom. Parents will be notified in writing of the team’s decision.
If you have questions about this process, or about gifted identification and programming, please email Eric Rippeth, Secondary GT Liaison.

We hope you can join us!  RSVP to Heather Bowling click here to sign up for your potluck items by October 8th.
