SOAR ranch has closed, forcing us to re-evaluate our wilderness experience for students. Wilderness is an opportunity at the beginning of the year to bring returning students and new students together in an environment that promotes building close relationships to ease transitions into the new school year. This trip also allows our students and staff and coaches to work with community members to build on improving the 4 C's: Character, Courage, Commitment, and Compassion.

UPDATED! School Year 2019-2020
|
|
First Day of School: New students 8:30a-12:30p (lunch provided); All students 12:30p-3:40p
Bell Schedule Highlights for 2019-20:
- Winter schedule will finish before 5:00 PM. We heard loud and clear that 5:30 was too late, and we will be out of school at 4:55.
- Still maintain a later start in the winter schedule to protect training time for our athletes that travel farther for training.
- The Winter B schedule was quite successful and we will maintain it. We extended it one week earlier to start after the long weekend in March and one week later after the April break. This will help with athletes that have finished their season while allowing other teams to continue. This also helps with students that participate in a spring sport.
For more background information on rationale, see last Yeti times of 2018-19 school year.

The VSSA lobby will be under construction for roughly the first month of school (permits for construction were delayed).
We will have secure entrances once finished. We are excited to have new paint, furniture, and carpet throughout the school, as well as a new lobby. The Think Tank will have a fresh updated look by November. Wade, Gibby, and Heidi (in the health office) are available in the office, so take care if you need to visit.
Please note that students and parents need to use the side entrance by the playground until lobby construction is complete.

Dear VSSA Families,
I wanted to start by welcoming you to another great year at VSSA. It has been a pleasure to work with your kids over the last eight years and I am excited to start things up for the 2019-2020 school year. I am super excited to have Lauren Ruhl join our school community this year.
Lauren is here to help our student-athletes develop the mental toolbox that allows them to feel prepared in whatever situation pops up in life and sport. It is important to understand that Lauren is here to support our student-athletes with their overall mental health yet has the ability to support them on the mental side of sport as well.
Parents, teachers, and coaches, if you are interested in having your student-athlete participate in services with either counselor, please fill out the referral form. Both myself and Lauren will assess and respond based on need, issue, and severity. Please click here for the referral form.
As the counselors at VSSA, we will maintain confidentiality for students whenever possible. Limits to confidentiality include mandated reporting laws. Counselors are required to take appropriate action if students engage in behavior that presents clear and imminent danger to themselves or others. Counselors are also required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect. If students work with Lauren Ruhl for more than one or two sessions, a consent form must be signed by both student and parents to ensure there is an understanding of furthered services.
Both individual and group work may be utilized for your student at VSSA. Parents will be informed if any safety concerns are identified or if additional support is recommended in the home or community. If you do not want your child to participate in counseling services, by either myself and Lauren, please contact me at the beginning of the school year. If you believe your child is in need of specific support by the counseling department or you have concerns about your student please utilize our new referral form. This form will be provided to students, parents and teachers and can be found in the Yeti Times as well the districts website.
We will continue implementing our 4 Core Values of Courage, Commitment, Character and Compassion as we strive for a positive and supportive school culture.
We look forward to serving the needs of your child in the 2019-2020 school year. Pay attention to announcements in the weekly Yeti Times and mark your calendars for the yearly parent night scheduled for the evening of August 29th and the Aspen College Fair on October 6th. Volunteers Needed!
We are in need of volunteers to fill many executive positions for the 2019-2020 academic year, including PTA President!
After four years of serving in this role, I will be stepping aside to focus on other interests and activities. I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in becoming acquainted with VSSA, its families, and the intricacies of the relationship that exists between SSCV and VSSA. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Wade Hill or Gibby Sullivan.
Welcome Back! Stacey Birtwhistle

This event is for parents and adults who live and work with children of all school ages. Dr. Paul will provide specific tips for how to improve your daily communication while navigating tough topics. Being able to learn these skills will help improve your family's and youth's environment, as well as increase emotional intelligence.
Eat Chat Parent is not just for parents. Everyone is welcome and youth 5th grade and up are encouraged to attend with an adult. Coaches, teachers, counselors, grandparents and nonbiological caregivers are also encouraged to attend. Spanish speakers are also welcome as we provide simultaneous interpretation!
In addition to providing "How To" tips, Eat Chat Parent events aim to break stigmas around behavioral health and stimulate community conversation. It is our hope that together we can learn to discuss behavorial health topics as easily as we do our physical health.
New this year Eagle County School District will offer professional training credit if you attend. Must redeem attendance certificate at the Eat Chat Parent event from Carol Johnson. PowerHours parents will also receive credit. After the event is over, attendance certificates will be available.
