GT News: Parent Nominations

Dear Families,
Each fall Eagle County Schools opens a window to include parent nomination as an avenue to screen students for gifted ability. Parents can pick up a nomination packet at their child’s school. The nomination packet includes additional information about the identification process, a checklist, permission to test form, characteristics of gifted learners and a Kingore Observation Inventory (KOI) for parents. The 2014 fall nomination window will be open from Monday September 29 through Friday October 17, and nomination packets will be available in the front office just prior to the window. Please note that nomination packets will not be accepted before or after these dates. Please return completed nomination packets to your child’s classroom teacher, the gifted specialist or the front office at your child’s school.

The KOI is an opportunity for parents to highlight their child’s advanced behaviors. Typically, gifted children are two or more years above grade level, are good problem solvers, may prefer the company of adults, and need little or no practice to learn a new skill. Young gifted children may have taught themselves to read at an early age or mastered math skills intuitively.

In addition to the information gathered from the Parent KOI, the district will gather information from the classroom teacher(s), the student’s classroom performance and standardized testing of verbal, non-verbal and quantitative ability. The goal is to gather a sufficient body of evidence (BOE) to determine the appropriate educational placement for your child. This process may take up to 6-8 weeks. In December, a group of gifted specialists will review all information and recommend gifted placement or continuation of services in the regular classroom. Parents will be notified in writing of the team’s decision.

If you have questions about this process, or about gifted identification and programming, please email Eric Rippeth, Secondary GT Liaison.

VSSA Parents,

As discussed at Parent Night, the Eagle River Youth Coalition's Fall Active Parenting class begins in two weeks at BMHS and they still have space available.  Please see the attached flyer or web link for more info. Thank you very much!

We hope you will be able to make the 10th annual Colorado Western Slope College Fair on Sunday, October 5th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Aspen High School!

New for this year- All students are required to register before entering the Fair and they are offering early electronic registration.  Students please register by clicking here or by navigating to the Students & Families page clicking on STUDENTS – REGISTER HERE!  It takes only a minute or two.  Please register before you come and print and take a screen shot of your email confirmation and to bring it with you!  They will still be offering registration at the Fair for those who are unable to register ahead of time.

Another workshop has been added on digital media held before the Fair at 10:00 am: DIGITAL MEDIA ART & DESIGN: EMERGING MEDIA IN EMERGING MARKETS

Rob Martin, Director of The Isaacson School of New Media, Colorado Mountain College

The intersection of art and technology is a moving target with careers that rapidly change. Choosing a school that teaches how to adapt as technology evolves is important. Learn what you need to consider in a college.

Please visit the College Fair's website for a complete list of attending Colleges and Universities, a schedule of Workshops and more!

Again, if you need a ride on Sunday let Charlene know by October 1st so vans can be reserved.

We hope you can join us!  RSVP to Heather Bowling click here to sign up for your potluck items by October 8th.
