Ski & Snowboard Club Vail invites you to become a Welcome/Ambassador Family for one of the new full-time families joining the SSCV community for 2016-2017. Do you remember your first months new to a full-time program, SSCV or the Vail Valley? You were likely filled with excitement and perhaps a number of questions not only about the day-to-day things that come up as a full-time family that you might have liked to have asked a fellowparent, but also, if you were new to the area, about the community. This is a great opportunity with a personal approach for you to help a new full-time family make this transition.
We would like to pair each new SSCV full-time family with a current SSCV full-time family who has a child of a similar age in the same school and snow sport who will help provide a warm welcome and assist them with the transition, along with answering day-to-day questions that may arise throughout the season. We want these new families transitioning into the full-time program from both near and far to feel welcomed and have a familiar face as they begin their new adventure as a full-time family!
We are looking for full-time families to sign up and volunteer NOW for the 2016-17 school year. To learn more, and if you are interested in becoming an ambassador/welcome family for the upcoming season, please contact Sharon Schmidt firstname.lastname@example.org or Holly Adelman email@example.com who is the volunteer coordinator for the new full-time family ambassador program by May 26.
Thank you for your consideration of support in welcoming our new full-time families!
News from Vail Public Library
Vail Public Library invites students, parents and teachers to visit us this summer. We have so many worthwhile programs to educate and entertain every age. The Summer Reading Program begins Tuesday, July 14. It meets weekly from 1 – 3 pm through August 2nd. There are two separate groups: for those entering grades 1 -3 and grades 4 – 6. If your child is otherwise occupied on Tuesday afternoons, please remember that the reading log and related prizes are an independent piece. Sign up to participate and come in at your convenience to redeem your minutes read. The Teenage Summer Reading Program is also independent and allows teens to participate in activities that enter their name in a raffle for prizes. The kick off is a psychic program on Monday June 13th at 5:30 pm! There is even an Adult Summer Reading program that works in a similar way. Make summer reading a family affair!
Reading buddies for kids going into 1st – 3rd grades is offered on Mondays from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Our Robotics Club is a new program you’ll want to explore. August 1 – 3, Summer Science Camp for students ages 9 – 12 will explore water with the program “Modelmy Watershed”.

Please Consider Hosting an SSCV Athlete
A chance for your family to create a wonderful experience for a committed full-time student athlete
Ski & Snowboard Club Vail has a small number of full-time high school student athletes in various snow sports who will attend either Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy or Winter Tutorial for the upcoming academic year and who are in need of a host family. Whether you are a returning SSCV family or you are new to the SSCV program for the upcoming season, please consider hosting one of these athletes in your home. It provides a wonderful opportunity for your family to form a long-lasting friendship with the athlete and helps the athlete pursue his or her dream. Please feel free to pass along this request to others in the community who you believe would enjoy this special experience.
We are excited to share that Gail Brandt will be taking over as the Volunteer Host Family Coordinator. She has lived in the Vail Valley for 37 years. Her family has been involved with Ski & Snowboard Vail since the 1980’s, most recently with Gail having two athletes in the SSCV program. Gail’s oldest daughter skied in the Mogul program for 3 years. Her younger daughter is starting her 10th year in the Alpine program and her 4th year at Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy as a sophomore.
To learn more about the host family opportunity please contact Gail Brandt in the next week via email or on her cell phone at 970 376-0924 for details. Thank you for your consideration.
First Day of School and the August Wilderness Trip!
VSSA will kick-off the 2016-2017 school year in August with our second annual all-school camping trip at SOAR (Spirit of Adventure Ranch) near Sweetwater, Colorado. The trip will occur the on the first two days of school: Thursday, August 18th and Friday August 19th. Mandatory attendance is expected on this trip.
Once again, each class will participate in adventures both on and off the premises and camping in tipis around the property. Stay tuned for the individual class activities in the an upcoming June newsletter.
An abundance of strong adult leadership is a key component in ensuring the success of our trip. We welcome your volunteer time in helping with class activities and duties around camp. Please email Katie MacFarlane to volunteer, or with any questions you may have. Thank you!
Looking to take an online class this summer?
Mr. Martin and Ms. Krone will be running a summer program in the Think Tank for those that sign up for online classes and are looking for extra support/structure. The program will run 3 days/week with an open door schedule (10am-4pm) to accommodate different athletic programs’ training schedules. Dates, cost, Ms. Whitney’s recommendations, and more here.
What are you doing this summer?!
It's time to determine what your schedule will allow and how you can use this break to build your resume and engage your passions. Are you interested in a summer job? Taking a college class? focusing on ACT/SAT prep? Spending time on a college campus at a pre-collegiate program? Participating in community service or an internship? Take a look at the attached document that will provide a glimpse of some of these options. Contact your counselor, Charlene Whitney to discuss more.
