Please Consider Hosting an SSCV Athlete
A chance for your family to create a wonderful experience for a committed full-time student athlete
Ski & Snowboard Club Vail has a small number of full-time high school student athletes in various snow sports who will attend either Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy or Winter Tutorial for the upcoming academic year and who are in need of a host family. Whether you are a returning SSCV family or you are new to the SSCV program for the upcoming season, please consider hosting one of these athletes in your home. It provides a wonderful opportunity for your family to form a long-lasting friendship with the athlete and helps the athlete pursue his or her dream. Please feel free to pass along this request to others in the community who you believe would enjoy this special experience.
We are excited to share that Gail Brandt will be taking over as the Volunteer Host Family Coordinator. She has lived in the Vail Valley for 37 years. Her family has been involved with Ski & Snowboard Vail since the 1980’s, most recently with Gail having two athletes in the SSCV program. Gail’s oldest daughter skied in the Mogul program for 3 years. Her younger daughter is starting her 10th year in the Alpine program and her 4th year at Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy as a sophomore.
To learn more about the host family opportunity please contact Gail Brandt in the next week via email or on her cell phone at 970 376-0924 for details. Thank you for your consideration.
First Day of School and the August Wilderness Trip!
VSSA will kick-off the 2016-2017 school year in August with our second annual all-school camping trip at SOAR (Spirit of Adventure Ranch) near Sweetwater, Colorado. The trip will occur the on the first two days of school: Thursday, August 18th and Friday August 19th. Mandatory attendance is expected on this trip.
Once again, each class will participate in adventures both on and off the premises and camping in tipis around the property. Stay tuned for the individual class activities in the an upcoming June newsletter.
An abundance of strong adult leadership is a key component in ensuring the success of our trip. We welcome your volunteer time in helping with class activities and duties around camp. Please email Katie MacFarlane to volunteer, or with any questions you may have. Thank you!
Looking to take an online class this summer?
Mr. Martin and Ms. Krone will be running a summer program in the Think Tank for those that sign up for online classes and are looking for extra support/structure. The program will run 3 days/week with an open door schedule (10am-4pm) to accommodate different athletic programs’ training schedules. Dates, cost, Ms. Whitney’s recommendations, and more here.
What are you doing this summer?!
It's time to determine what your schedule will allow and how you can use this break to build your resume and engage your passions. Are you interested in a summer job? Taking a college class? focusing on ACT/SAT prep? Spending time on a college campus at a pre-collegiate program? Participating in community service or an internship? Take a look at the attached document that will provide a glimpse of some of these options. Contact your counselor, Charlene Whitney to discuss more.
ECS Food Services & Summer Lunch 2016
Summer Lunch 2016 (previously known as the Summer Foods Service Program) will be launching June 6 in three of our schools: Avon Elementary, Berry Creek Middle School, and Eagle Valley High.
This program provides free nutritious lunch to any child in Eagle County, Monday through Thursday each week. The program is run by InteGreat! and the food is prepared and provided by ECS Food Services and hundreds of volunteers. More information will be coming out about the service hours and fun programming that is planned during the lunch times at each campus.
The program relies on volunteers to staff the lunchrooms and support the families. It's really one of the most fun things you might do this summer! The kids are great and the families appreciate us being there. Volunteers also get a free lunch!
Please sign up for one shift or multiple ones from Monday to Thursday at any site (Avon Elementary, Berry Creek Middle, Eagle Valley High School); shifts range from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (lunch time). Opportunities range from cafeteria support to activity help to safe passage leads. Once a volunteer completes an application, they are contacted regarding a shift/role that works for them.
Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer unless they are accompanied by an adult. Families are welcome to volunteer together. The application is online, and can be accessed with this link: Summer Lunch Volunteer Application 2016.
