Televisions and gas canisters among items collected on council litter pick

Televisions, planters, gas canisters and an office chair were among the items found when Ongar Town Council held its latest litter pick.

Volunteers met at Jubilee Park, Love Lane (Saturday, November 14) before concentrating their efforts on the northern - Shelley - end of the town.

In addition to the large items collected, the volunteers also amassed ten bags of rubbish and six bags of recyclable items.

The council said it was particularly distressing to find builders' rubble, including roof felt, dumped in the community orchard off St Peter’s Avenue.

Ongtar Town Council chairman councillor Jim Browning said: “We wanted to show the community that dropping litter is not acceptable.

"It was much worse than I had thought and I was surprised and dismayed by the collection of things that we found while walking the streets.

"The clean-up will show others that we care about the future of our local environment and that we are not prepared to live in an area that is blighted by rubbish.

"Working together like this creates a sense of community.”
