Students visit London Stock Exchange

West Hatch High School students visited the London Stock Exchange as part of World Investor Week, joining the World Federation of Exchanges to ‘Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy’.

World Investor Week saw almost 80 exchanges globally take part in a range of events aimed at highlighting the importance of financial literacy.

Students had the opportunity to hear about the work which goes on at the London Stock Exchange and the impact this has both nationally and globally.

They also spoke to several employees and were able to ask about their routes into the industry and the challenges of their jobs.

A particular honour was given to one of the students, Jaina, when she was asked to officially open the Exchange - a much-coveted task reserved for VIPs.

There was also the honour, for Joshua, to sign the London Stock Exchange’s visitors book on behalf of West Hatch High School.

West Hatch High School's careers leader, Geoffrey Towsey, said: At West Hatch High School we understand the importance of financial literacy and the vital role it plays in preparing students for their future. It is for this reason that we continue to include financial literacy lessons as part of our core curriculum in Years 9 and 10 - ensuring students have an hour of financial literacy a week."

The importance of financial literacy was echoed by London Stock Exchange CEO Julia Hoggett who said: “Building financial literacy can have a defining impact on an individual’s life - from savings to pensions, to the entrepreneurs of the future knowing how to think about how they finance their visions.

"We all have to make financial decisions throughout our lives, many of them remarkably complex, and understanding these is vital in helping us make the right choices for ourselves and our families.”
