Students attend journalism conference

Five West Hatch High School Sixth Form students attended a Journalism Conference at the News Academy building at London Bridge.

The event delivered workshops with top journalists from The Times, Sunday Times and The Sun when the journalists spoke about their careers.

Students were then able to ask questions about the industry, and they could take part in a mock press conference which resulted in a competition to produce the best headline and to write a report of no more than 300 words, all in under ten minutes.

At the end, panellists talked about the future of the daily printed newspaper and students were invited to ask questions.

They were advised to be proactive in writing blogs and be willing to comment on day-to-day issues.

The journalists talked about how social media has made it easier for everyone to become involved with the power of blogging and with individual Twitter accounts there is now direct access to journalists and editors.

West Hatch High School's KS5 co-ordinator Karen Moore said: "This was an excellent event held in the offices of News International.

The students enjoyed their visit which gave them an insight into how to start a career in journalism."

Year 12 student Rhiannon Gallery said: "It was a  really good day, and it got me thinking on how I can improve my writing style and how to get my work out to the public."
